Stags Top Tigers and Captains on Strong Sunday

The No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team earned a pair of victories on Sunday to improve to 8-1 on the season. First the Stags traveled to Occidental and swept the Tigers 9-0 in their first SCIAC match of the season. CMS then returned home and defeated the No. 30 Christopher Newport Captains 7-2 at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. Eleven Stags contributed to the two dual match wins.

Athenas Wrap Strong Arizona Trip with Two Wins on Sunday

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team wrapped up the 2018 NFCA Leadoff Tournament on Sunday with two more wins to finish the weekend with a 5-1 record. The Athenas defeated Pacific (OR) 9-1 in six innings in the first game before taking care of Fontbonne 8-7.

Homer Happy Stags, Split Double-Dip with Visiting Leopards

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team split a doubleheader with the visiting La Verne Leopards on Arce Field on Sunday afternoon. The Stags won the first game of the double-dip 7-1, before dropping a tough 7-6 decision in the nightcap. CMS hammered four home runs on the day, including three in the Game One victory.

Huge First-Half Leads Athenas Past Poets

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s lacrosse team won their third-straight SCIAC game with a 20-3 drumming of the Whittier Poets on Saturday morning. The Athenas held the Poets scoreless in the first-half and scored 13 goals to take a convincing 13-0 lead into the break. During the opening period, CMS held a 32-1 advantage in shots taken. CMS scored the first two goals of the second-half before cruising to a 20-3 victory. The Athenas were paced on the afternoon by three-goal efforts from Allie Hill (CMC), Julia Mueller (SC), and Corie Hack (CMC). In total, 11 different Athenas registered goals in the convincing conference victory.

Athenas Earn 10th Win to Open Season, Top No. 16 Tigers

The No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team earned another top-25 victory with a convincing win over No. 16 Trinity (TX) on Saturday morning. The Athenas earned their second 8-1 victory in as many days. CMS swept doubles play to build a 3-0 lead. After a win by Kyla Scott (HMC) at #4 singles, Lindsay Brown (CMC) secured the victory for the Athenas at #3 singles with a 6-0, 6-1 win for the fifth point of the match for CMS.

Stags Push No. 1 Blues to OT, Tourney Run Ends in Second Round

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s basketball team and the No. 1 Whitman Blues were feeling a little bit of déjà vu on Saturday night. For the second year in a row, the CMS Stags and Whitman Blues squared off on the Blues’ home floor in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. While Saturday’s game had its own twists and turns, the ending felt eerily similar as well. The Blues narrowly edged the Stags, 89-84 to escape with a five-point victory and advance to the Sweet Sixteen. At the same time, the Stags’ season ends in heartbreaking fashion for the second-straight year in Walla Walla, Wash.

Athenas Beat the Buzzer to Cap Off Strong Convergence Weekend

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team split the final day of the 2018 Convergence Tournament, falling to UC San Diego 16-4 before taking down Cal State Monterey Bay 6-5 with a last second goal from Amelia Ayala (CMC). The victory moves the Athenas to 6-4 overall on the season and caps off an exciting 3-1 weekend for CMS. The Athenas earned one-goal victories over Somona St., Villanova, and Cal State Monterey Bay. CMS is next in action on Wednesday when they travel across the street to take on the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens at 7:00 p.m. in their second SCIAC game of the season.

Softball Splits Day Two of NFCA Leadoff Classic

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team split Day Two of the 2018 NFCA Leadoff Classic in Tucson, Ariz. on Saturday. The Athenas defeated the Manhattanville Valiants 9-1 in five innings before falling to Pacific Luthern 6-5 in eight innings. The Athenas are now 8-4 on the season and conclude the NFCA Leadoff Classic tomorrow morning. CMS will face Pacific (Ore.) at 9:00 a.m. and Fontbonne at 12:30 p.m. before heading home to face Redlands on Mar. 10 in Claremont.

La Verne Tops Stags to Start Three-Game Set

The La Verne Leopards scored 12 unanswered runs to defeat the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags 12-1 to open a three-game SCIAC series on Saturday afternoon. The Stags took a 1-0 lead with a Patrick Gavin (CMC) single in the top of the second, but the Leopards responded with runs in the second, third, and fifth to take a 5-1 advantage heading into the sixth. CMS drops their first SCIAC game of the season and moves to 3-1 in conference play. The Stags are now 9-6 overall and will look to bounce back tomorrow when they host the Leopards in a doubleheader at Arce Field beginning at 11:00 a.m.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's track and field team took part in the first SCIAC Multi Dual of the season on Saturday at Occidental College. The Stags came away with two wins, defeating La Verne 89-74 and Chapman 133-12, but fell in a tight battle with Occidental 82-79. Three Stags posted first-place finishes. The Stags are back in action on Mar. 10 when they head to Occidental College for the Oxy Distance and Sprint Carnival.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's track and field team dominated the first SCIAC Multi Dual of the season at Occidental College on Saturday. The Athenas defeated all three conference opponents at the event, beating Occidental (99-64), La Verne (122-40), and Chapman (157-4) by convincing margins. The Athenas also posted eight first-place finishes throughout the day. The Athenas are back in action next Saturday when they travel back to Occidental fro the Oxy Distance and Sprint Carnival on Mar. 10.

No Raining on this Parade! Athenas Top Nova and Somona State

On a cool and rainy Day One of the 2018 Convergence Tournament, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team came away with a pair of exhilarating one-goal victories. First, the Athenas defeated Sonoma State 7-6 on a buzzer beating goal from Jessica Gaffney (CMC) before topping Villanova 12-11 in overtime. Roxy Kiessling (CMC) led the Athenas with five goals on the day and Chandlyr Denaro (CMC) made 13 saves to earn the win in both contests.

Survive and Advance: Stags Top No. 2 Whitworth, Move to NCAA Second Round

It was a back-and-forth, heavyweight battle that's normally reserved for much later in the tournament. Unfortunately for one team, Friday's thriller was the end of the line in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. For the second year in a row, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team squared off with the No. 2 Whitworth Pirates in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. The Stags and Pirates traded the lead 16 times in the contest with neither team holding more than a seven-point advantage, but when the dust settled after 40 minutes it was the Stags who earned the hard-fought 83-82 victory and a trip to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. CMS will move on to face the No. 1 Whitman Blues on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.

Women's Tennis Tops No. 24 Southwestern to Start Texas Trip

In a Top-25 showdown, the No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s tennis team improved their winning streak to nine matches with an 8-1 victory over the No. 24 Southwestern Pirates on Friday afternoon. The Athenas won all six singles matches in straight sets and picked up two of the three doubles matches for the convincing victory.
