With a victory against Chapman over the weekend, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s basketball team claimed a share of the SCIAC Championship. The Athenas and Panthers finished the regular season tied on top of the SCIAC Standings with a 15-1 conference record. A coin flip following the final game of the season gave the Athenas the top seed heading into this weekend’s tournament. No. 1 CMS will host the No. 4 Redlands Bulldogs on Thursday night in Roberts Pavilion at 7:00 p.m.

Kirsch Brothers Lead Stags Over Beavers In Regular Season Finale

On Tuesday night, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s basketball team wrapped up the regular season with a 75-68 victory over the Caltech Beavers. With the 2017-18 SCIAC Championship and top-seed in the SCIAC Tournament already locked up, the Stags used the game to showcase their depth and the talent of their bench. Brothers, Maxwell Kirsch (CMC) and Mitchell Kirsch (CMC) led the way for the Stags with 17 and 16 points respectively. Mitchell finished just shy of a double-double, grabbing nine rebounds to go along with his 16 points. Maxwell grabbed six rebounds and dished out four assists. The brothers combined to go a perfect 15-15 from the free throw line.

Everything has to go a certain way or you get flustered. So flustered that you might not see which doors are open for you. Yes, yes, at 13 years old you have already perfected your nonchalant, super quiet personality, but on the inside I know you're freaking out when the littlest thing changes.

Over the next four days the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) will hold the men’s and women’s swimming and diving 2017-18 conference championships at the Brenda Villa Aquatic Center in Commerce, Calif. The Stags and Athenas will go toe-to-toe with the rest of the SCIAC. Both the men’s and women’s championships look to be tight contests, with the Stags and Athenas facing stiff challenges from the other eight SCIAC schools, but in particular from the Sagehens from the other side of Sixth Street.

First-Half Lead Enough to Lead Athenas Past Tigers

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s lacrosse team opened SCIAC play on Wednesday afternoon with a 14-10 victory against Occidental. The Athenas took a 10-2 lead early in the second-half before the Tigers mounted a second-half comeback. Occidental’s late push was not enough as the Athenas held on for the four-goal victory to move to 1-1 on the season and start conference play 1-0. Senior Evan Murphy (CMC) and freshman Sally Abel (CMC) combined for nine total goals on the afternoon with Murphy leading the scoring effort with five tallies and an assist. Abel found the twine four times on nine shots.

On Thursday morning the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) released their All-Conference women’s basketball team. Among the 13 student-athletes named to the All-Conference teams were a trio of Athenas. Senior Kailee Severt (CMC) and sophomore Maya Love (CMC) earned First Team accolades while senior Corinne Bogle (CMC) was honored on the Second Team.

The top-seeded Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s basketball team edged the No. 4-seeded University of Redlands Bulldogs 69-65 on Thursday night to advance to their fifth-straight SCIAC Conference Championship Game on Saturday. Kate Parrish (CMC) led the Athenas with 16 points off the bench and Corinne Bogle (CMC) dropped 15. Maya Love (CMC) continued to dominate at both ends of the court, notching her 13th double-double of the season with 11 rebounds and 10 points.

Men's Basetball Set to Host SCIAC Semifinals Tonight

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s basketball team enters the 2018 SCIAC Tournament as the top seed and winners of their last 14 games. CMS claimed their 20th SCIAC Championship this season with a conference record of 15-1. The Stags will tip-off the SCIAC Semifinals on Friday night against the No. 4 Chapman Panthers. The Stags and Panthers will play in Roberts Pavilion on 7:00 p.m. The winner of Friday’s semifinal between CMS and Chapman will square off with the winner of No. 2 Occidental vs. No. 3 Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday night. Should the Stags win on Friday, CMS will host on Saturday, thanks to their top-seed status.

The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) released their All-Conference men’s basketball teams on Friday morning. The two teams, made up of 13 student-athletes, included a trio of Stags seniors. Michael Scarlett (CMC) headlined the awards season for the Stags, earning his second-straight David Wells Play of the Year honor. Scarlett was also recognition on the First Team alongside teammate Kendrick Morris (CMC). Fellow senior Scott Lynds (CMC) earned his first All-SCIAC honor with a Second Team nod. In addition to the trio named All-SCIAC, head coach Ken Scalmanini and his staff repeated as SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year.

Stags Split Double-Dip with Bobcats and Loggers

On Friday, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team hosted the Bates Bobcats and the Puget Sound Loggers in a split doubleheader. Trey Smith (CMC) delivered a two-run homer to left center in the bottom of the first inning against Bates and the Stags took advantage of a number of free passes from the Bobcats to earn a 9-1 victory in the first-half of the twin-bill. CMS dropped the nightcap of their doubleheader against the University of Puget Sound 13-3 in an eight-inning shortened due to darkness. The loss snaps the Stags’ seven-game winning streak.

No. 3 Women's Tennis Takes Care of Panthers on Friday Evening

The No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team swept the Chapman Panthers on Friday afternoon by a 9-0 final. The Athenas remain perfect on the season, moving to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in SCIAC play. The Athenas swept through doubles play with Catherine Allen (SC) and Caroline Cox (CMC) earning the first point for the Athenas at No. 1 doubles. The duo was the first off the court with an 8-3 victory at the top spot. At No. 2 doubles, Juliette Martin (HMC) and Lauren Yamagami (CMC) teamed up for an 8-3 victory and at No. 3 doubles, Anastasia Bryan-Ajania (SC) and Jessie Cruz (CMC) combined for an 8-5 win to complete the doubles sweep.

Stags Handle No. 12 Trinity (TX) in ITA Indoor Quarterfinals

The No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team opened the ITA Indoor Tennis National Championships with a convincing 9-0 victory over No. 12 Trinity (TX) in the Quarterfinals. The Stags swept all three doubles matches before dominating singles play. Across the six singles matches, CMS dropped just 21 games and earned straight-set victories at every position. The Stags will be back in action tomorrow when they square off with No. 6 Washington-St. Louis.

Stags Top Panthers, Set-Up Sixth Street Clash for SCIAC Tourney Title

The top-seeded Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team is headed to the SCIAC Tournament Championship Game after defeating the No. 4-seeded Chapman Panthers on Friday night 83-72. The Stags will face their rivals from across the street, the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens, on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. in Roberts Pavilion in a battle for the SCIAC Tournament Title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Saturday’s meeting will be the fifth time the two rivals have met in the Tournament Championship game. CMS will be making their ninth trip to the title game in its 11-year existence.

Stags Drop Contest Against Puget Sound

February 24, 2018

The Stags dropped a Saturday afternoon contest with the visiting Puget Sound Loggers by a 14-6 final score. The Loggers scored 10 times in the first two innings to build a 10-1 lead before winning by a comfortable 14-6 margin. CJ Novogradac (CMC) led the Stags' offense with a pair of hits on the day. Five different Stags collected RBI on the afternoon and Trey Smith (CMC) slashed the only extra-base hit, ripping an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth.
