Cross Country (Athenas)

The Athenas finished third (65) at the Coyote Challenge Invitational hosted by Cal State San Bernardino on Sept. 24 behind hosts CSUSB (26) and Cal State San Marcos (48). The Athenas ran a strong race in the 5K, with eight total runners finishing within the first 25. Junior Bryn McKillop (SCR ’18) finished 11th overall with a time of 19:31.4 to pace the Athenas. With four nonconference meets in the books so far this season, SCIAC competition and the SCIAC Multi-Dual Meet on Saturday, Oct. 1 is up next for CMS.

Cross Country (Stags)

The Stags took second place (63 points) at the Coyote Challenge Invitational hosted by Cal State San Bernardino on Sept. 24 behind Division II No. 25 Cal Baptist University (60). All five of the scoring Stags finished within the first 19 on the 8K course, including senior Kyle Lund (HMC ’17), who finished as the top Stag, in ninth place overall with a time 26:47.1. The SCIAC selected Lund as its Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week for the week of Sept. 19-25. With four nonconference meets in the books so far this season, SCIAC competition and the SCIAC Multi-Dual Meet on Saturday, Oct. 1 is up next for CMS.

Football

Off to a 2-0 start in 2016 after a pair of nonconference victories, the Stags had the week off from competition and are next in action Saturday, Oct. 1 at home against Whittier to begin conference play. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Golf (Stags)

The CMS men’s golf team finished in second place at the Cal State Intercollegiate at the Diamond Valley Golf Club in Hemet on Sept. 19-20. Junior Jonathan Shaw (CMC ’18) finished as the individual winner at 4-under par during the two-day tournament. He shot two rounds of 70, despite being faced with rainy weather. The Stags were back in action on Sept. 26-27 at the WNMU Fall Intercollegiate Tournament in Goodyear, Ariz. and placed seventh overall out of 20 programs. CMS competes for the last time this fall on Friday, Oct. 7 against La Verne in Chino Hills.

Soccer (Athenas)

With 1-0 wins at Occidental (Sept. 21) and home against La Verne (Sept. 24), CMS (5-4, 3-1) moved up the SCIAC standings and into first in the conference wins column. Junior midfielder Ellen Berkley (CMC ’18) scored the game-winner against Oxy and sophomore Megan Lo (CMC ’19) put away the win with the lone goal against La Verne. Junior defender Jacey Coniff (HMC ’18) led the stingy CMS defense, and for her efforts, the SCIAC selected her as its Women’s Soccer Athlete of the Week for the week of Sept. 19-25. Next on the schedule for the Athenas is a road match at Redlands on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m.

Soccer (Stags)

The Stags (7-1, 5-1) went 2-0 during the week with a 1-0 win at Whittier (Sept. 21) and a thrilling 3-2 double-overtime victory against Cal Lutheran (Sept. 24) at home. Freshman forward Patrick Burke (CMC ’20) scored a pair of goals during the week, including the game-winner against Whittier, and he had an assist against Cal Lutheran to earn SCIAC Men’s Soccer Athlete of the Week for the week of Sept. 19-25. CMS is now in second place in the SCIAC standings, behind Redlands, the team that handed CMS its lone conference loss earlier this season. Next on the schedule for CMS is a home match against La Verne on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m.

Volleyball

Over the course of three matches during the week, the second-ranked Athenas (12-0, 4-0) went 3-0 and lost only one set in the process. CMS won 3-0 at home against Occidental (Sept. 20), on the road 3-0 against La Verne (Sept. 23), and 3-1 at home against No. 4 Cal Lutheran (Sept. 24) in a showdown between two of the top teams in all of Division III. Junior Shelbi Stein (CMC ’18) made the final kill of the match against CLU and she hit .394 with 16 kills and just three errors. The SCIAC selected her as its Volleyball Athlete of the Week for the week of Sept. 19-25. CMS is in first place in the SCIAC and its next match is Friday, Sept. 30 at Caltech at 7 p.m.

Water Polo (Stags)

In its lone match of the week, the Stags lost 18-9 at Cal Baptist on Sept. 23. The Stags kept the game close through the first quarter but then the well-organized CBU put together 13 goals in 16 minutes of clock time in the middle of the game. Senior Alex Waggoner (CMC ’17) led CMS offensively with four goals. The Stags fell to 3-8 overall but are currently ranked No. 2 in Division III by Collegiate Water Polo and have not played an SCIAC match. CMS will return to Riverside on Friday, Sept. 30 to play Fresno Pacific and CBU again in the Lancer Invite.
