Cross Country (Athenas)

The Athenas ran in two events at the multi-division UC Riverside Invitational on Sept. 17. In the 6K invitational race, CMS finished third overall, ahead of several Division II programs. Only D-II UC San Diego (second) and the Cal Coast Track Club (first) finished ahead of CMS. Junior Bryn McKillop (SCR ’18) was third overall in the 6K with a record-breaking time of 20:47.94, breaking prior record holder Jen Tave’s mark of 20:51.8.

In the 5K open event, the Athenas placed 10th overall and had five runners cross the finish line in personal-best times, including junior Roselyn Cantu (CMC ’18), who finished in 44th (out of 227) at 19:02.10. Next on the schedule for CMS is the Coyote Invitational in San Bernardino on Saturday, Sept. 24.

Cross Country (Stags)

Out of 22 teams, the Stags finished in seventh place at the multi-division UC Riverside Invitational 8K event on Sept. 17 with a combined score of 20. The team finished with an average time of 25:28.28. Senior Joshua Sealand (HMC ’17) placed 17th overall and had the highest finish for the Stags with a time of 24:51.72. Sealand’s time moved him to No. 10 all-time for CMS in the 8K distance. Senior Kyle Lund (HMC ’17) was the second-highest finisher, taking 29th with a time of 25:12.21. Next on the schedule for CMS is the Coyote Invitational in San Bernardino on Saturday, Sept. 24.

Football

Faced with a 28-13 fourth-quarter deficit, CMS (2-0) rallied for a comeback win at Washington and Lee University (1-2) on Sept. 17. Washington and Lee (Va.) was ranked No. 20 in the preseason by D3football.com after an undefeated 2015 regular season. As time expired in the fourth quarter on Saturday, senior Matthew Aven (CMC) made the game-winning field goal from 34 yards out. Senior quarterback Trey Reynolds (CMC ’17) accounted for both of CMS’ fourth-quarter touchdowns (one running, one passing) to lead the comeback. With 283 yards passing in the game, Reynolds set the career passing yards record for CMS. Reynolds has passed for 4,871 yards in his career. CMS begins conference play on Saturday, Oct. 1 at home against Whittier.

Golf (Stags)

Just over four months after winning the program’s first NCAA Division III national championship, the Stags are back on the golf course this week (Sept. 19-20) for the first of two fall tournaments.

Soccer (Athenas)

The Athenas (3-4, 1-1 SCIAC) split a pair of matches during the week. CMS lost 3-2 at home to Pomona-Pitzer (Sept. 14) and then knocked off previously unbeaten, No. 17 Cal Lutheran (Sept. 17) 1-0, also at Pritzlaff Field. Against Cal Lutheran, senior Laynee Laube (CMC ’17) scored the lone goal, her third of the season, while senior Kelly McConnell (HMC ’17) kept the Athenas alive with 10 saves, earning her third shutout of the season. CMS is in a six-way tie for second in the conference through two conference matches. The next match for the Athenas is Wednesday, Sept. 21 at Occidental.

Soccer (Stags)

SCIAC-leading and 11th-ranked Redlands handed CMS (5-1) its first defeat of the season, a 2-1 loss in Redlands (Sept. 14). A little later in the week, CMS bounced back with a 5-0 win at Caltech (Sept. 17). CMS benefited from six goals by six players during the two matches. Senior William Cresap (CMC ’17), junior Matthew Swift (CMC ’18) and junior Jacob Skoll (CMC ’18) each scored their first goal of the season. CMS is currently in third place in the nine-team SCIAC standings. The next match for the Stags is Wednesday, Sept. 21 at Whittier.

Volleyball

A dominant start to the season continued for the second-ranked Athenas into the team’s first conference match of the season. For its lone match of the week, CMS traveled to Chapman (Sept. 16) and won 3-0. Junior setter Clara Madsen (CMC ’18) came away with a team-high 16 assists and she added eight digs. Senior Nicole Kerkhof (CMC ’17) posted a double-double (12 kills and 14 digs). CMS has three SCIAC matches this week, including a pair of crucial early season SCIAC matches this weekend: at La Verne (Sept. 23) and a showdown in Roberts Pavilion against defending national champion and fourth-ranked Cal Lutheran (Sept. 24).

Water Polo (Stags)

At the UC Davis Aggie Invite over the weekend, CMS (2-7) went 0-3 with an 18-5 loss to UC Davis (Sept. 17), a 17-4 loss to Pacific (Sept. 18) and a 27-5 loss to Cal (Sept. 18). Senior attacker Ellison Taylor (CMC ’17) scored four goals (two each against Davis and Pacific). The Stags travel to Cal Baptist on Sept. 23 for their next match.
