CMS Week In Review September 5 - September 11

The women’s cross country team took fourth place at the Biola Invitational on Sept. 10, behind NCAA D-II No. 17 Cal Baptist, Point Loma, and NAIA No. 2 Biola. The Athenas had 79 team points while first-place Cal Baptist came away with 43 points. Junior Bryn McKillop (SCR ’18) for the second straight week was the highest finisher among the Athenas, taking third place in the 5K race with a time of 17:02.38, while senior Carmen Mejia (SCR ’17) was second with a 13th-place finish (17:29.96). THIS WEEK’S MEET: at UC Riverside Invitational (Sept. 17 – 7:30 a.m.)

Cross Country (Stags)

The Stags finished in the top spot as a team at the Biola Invitational on Sept. 10. Three of the top-10 individual finishers were from CMS, with senior Joshua Sealand (HMC ’17) leading the way among the Stags, taking fourth place with a time of 24:32.82. Another pair of seniors, Kyle Lund (HMC ’17) and Nico Banks (CMC ’17) took sixth and eighth, respectively, with times of 24:38.05 and 24:46.27. THIS WEEK’S MEET: at UC Riverside Invitational (Sept. 17 – 7:30 a.m.)

Football

In the season and home-opener, CMS (1-0) beat the Lewis & Clark College Pioneers 35-3. The Stags rushed for 185 yards and scored 14 points off turnovers for the decisive victory. The win was the fourth straight for CMS against Lewis & Clark (Ore.) dating back to 2013 and sixth straight for CMS overall, dating back to Oct. 10 of last season. Senior quarterback Trey Reynolds (CMC ’17) threw for three of the touchdowns while junior Andrew Segre (CMC ’18) and senior Matthew Orehek (CMC ’17) ran in the other two TDs. Senior defensive back Griffin Lazarus (CMC ’17) recorded his first pick of the season for the Stags and the defense limited Lewis & Clark to just 260 yards of total offense. THIS WEEK’S GAME: at Washington and Lee (Va.) (Sept. 17 – 5 p.m. EDT)

Soccer (Athenas)

CMS (2-3-0) had a difficult road trip to Texas this past weekend, suffering close losses at No. 7 Trinity University (4-0-0) on Sept. 9 and vs. Hardin-Simmons University (3-1-0) on Sept. 11. Senior Katelyn Faust (CMC ’17) scored the only goal for CMS in its 2-1 loss to Trinity, while the team was shut out 1-0 in its loss to Hardin-Simmons. Senior goalkeeper Kelly McConnell (HMC ’17) came away with a combined eight saves for the Athenas. THIS WEEK’S MATCHES: Home vs. Pomona-Pitzer (Sept. 14 – 7 p.m.); home vs. Cal Lutheran (Sept. 17 – 7 p.m.)

Soccer (Stags)

Three matches. Three wins at home for CMS (4-0). Each of the wins were also by just one goal. In front of packed bleachers, CMS defeated Pomona-Pitzer 1-0 on Sept. 5 to start SCIAC play. The Stags then followed with a 2-1 win over Occidental on Sept. 7 and 2-1 victory over Pacific (Ore.) on Sept. 9. Against Pacific, with five seconds left on the clock, senior Ian Shelton (CMC ’17) punched in the game-winner amid traffic in the box. An early SCIAC showdown at No. 21 Redlands is up next for first-place CMS. THIS WEEK’S MATCHES: at Redlands (Sept. 14 – 7 p.m.); at Caltech (Sept. 17 – 11 a.m.)

Volleyball

At the always-tough Cal Lu Fornia Invitational over the weekend, the fourth-ranked Athenas (8-0) showed why they are among the very best teams in Division III in 2016. CMS went 4-0 with wins over East Texas Baptist (3-0), No. 6 Emory (Ga.) (3-1), Wheaton (Ill.) (3-1) and No. 10 Washington University (Mo.) (3-0). Wash U knocked CMS out of the NCAA playoffs in 2015. Against Emory, senior Nicole Kerkhof (CMC ’17) came away with a double-double (14 kills and 17 digs) while junior Shelbi Stein (CMC ’18) also had a team-high 14 kills. Kerkhof also led the way in kills against Wash U (16). Over the four matches, junior Crystal Anderson (CMC ’18) led the Athenas with a stunning, team-high 10 solo blocks. SCIAC play starts this week for the Athenas. THIS WEEK’S MATCHES: at Chapman (Sept. 16 – 7 p.m.)

Water Polo (Stags)

CMS (2-4) earned its first wins of the 2016 campaign against Concordia (15-7) and Redlands (10-9 in overtime) at the annual Inland Empire Classic hosted by the University of Redlands on Sept. 10-11. On the weekend, the Stags were 2-2 overall with losses to two highly ranked D-I institutions: Pepperdine and Long Beach State. The leading scorer for CMS was senior Alex Waggoner (CMC ’17), who netted 11 goals. His highest scoring came against Concordia, with four goals in the team’s first win. Defensively, returning senior Rye Newman (CMC ’17) spent the majority of the minutes in the net for the Stags. THIS WEEK’S MATCHES: at UC Davis Aggie Invite: vs. American River College (Sept. 17 – 9:40 a.m.); vs. UC Davis (Sept. 17 – 1:40 p.m.),;vs. Pacific (Sept. 18 – 9:20 a.m.); vs. California (Sept. 18 – noon)
