CMS Week In Review August 29 - September 8

The Athenas began their season Sept. 3 with the Nationball Classic and defeated Westmont 15-49. Of the top-10 finishers, eight were from CMS, led by Bryn McKillop (SCR ’18), who finished in 24:46. THIS WEEK’S MEET: at Biola Invitational (Sept. 10 – 8 a.m.)

Cross Country (Stags)

The Stags began their season Sept. 3 with the Nationball Classic and defeated Westmont 17-46. Of the top-10 finishers, nine were from CMS, led by freshman Thomas D’Anieri (CMC ’20), who finished in 20:55. THIS WEEK’S MEET: at Biola Invitational (Sept. 10 – 8 a.m.)

Football

Lewis & Clark (Ore.) pays a visit to Claremont on Sept. 10 for CMS’ 2016 season-opener. Kickoff is set for noon on Zinda Field. CMS is looking to improve on its 7-2 season from a year ago. Last season, CMS traveled to Lewis & Clark and won 27-7. THIS WEEK’S GAME: Lewis & Clark (Sept. 10 – noon)

Soccer (Athenas)

The Athenas went 2-1 during the opening week of the season with wins over Carthage (Wis.) (4-0) and UC Santa Cruz (2-0) and a loss at Biola (2-0). Laynee Laube (CMC ’17) and Katelyn Faust (CMC ’17) each scored two goals for CMS and goalkeeper Kelly McConnell (HMC ’17) came away with two shutouts in net. THIS WEEK’S MATCHES: at Trinity (Texas) (Sept. 9 – 6 p.m. CDT); vs. Hardin-Simmons (Texas) (Sept. 11 – 1 p.m. CDT)

Soccer (Stags)

Off to a 3-0 start to the season, CMS defeated Pacific Lutheran (4-1), Pomona-Pitzer (1-0) and Occidental (2-1) during the opening week. Patrick Burke (CMC ’20) scored a pair of goals in his first career match and Ryan Karle (CMC ’17) put away the game-winner against Sixth Street rival Pomona-Pitzer to name a few highlights. THIS WEEK’S MATCHES: Pacific (Sept. 9 – 7 p.m.)

Volleyball

In the annual Pacific Coast Classic volleyball tournament Sept. 2-3 hosted by CMS, Pomona-Pitzer and La Verne, CMS was one of only three teams that went undefeated. The Athenas dropped only two sets over the four matches and defeated Union (N.Y.) (3-0), Hendrix (Ark.) (3-0), Trinity (Texas) (3-1) and Minnesota-Morris (3-1). Over the weekend, senior Nicole Kerkhof (CMC ’17) earned 55 kills, breaking the 11-year-old career kills record set by Emily Bennett in 2005. In just over three years of playing, Kerkhof has already surpassed her predecessor’s 1,161 career kills. THIS WEEK’S MATCHES: at Cal Lu Fornia Invitational (Sept. 9-10)

Water Polo (Stags)

At the Triton Invite on Sept. 3, the Stags went 0-2 with losses to Pepperdine (15-8) and Stanford (15-3). Alex Waggoner (CMC ’17) scored four goals in the matches to pace CMS. THIS WEEK’S MATCHES: at Inland Empire Classic (Sept. 10-11)
