Football

After starting the season 4-0, the Stags (4-2, 2-2) dropped their second-straight game, this time a 23-17 loss at Redlands on Oct. 22. CMS nearly pulled off the comeback after being behind 23-3 in the fourth quarter. Junior Trey Smith (CMC ’18) recorded a season-high 145 receiving yards and caught one touchdown. On the defensive side, senior Henry Wei (CMC ’17) managed to force one fumble and junior Victor Bunce (CMC ’18) snagged an interception. The Stags are now tied for fourth in the conference with Chapman. CMS returns home on Saturday, Oct. 29 for a 1 p.m. showdown against La Verne.

Golf (Athenas)

The women’s golf team wrapped up its fall season on Oct. 17-18 with a second-place finish at the Embry Riddle Invitational and a No. 2 national ranking by Golfstat. This is the highest ranking for the Athenas in program history. Freshman Emma Kang (CMC ’20) led the Athenas and tied for third place on the leaderboard. She fired a 236 overall and improved each round. Her best round was a 74 in the final round. With the fall season wrapped up, the Athenas resume play in their traditional season in mid-February with the Walker Cup at Via Verde Country Club in San Dimas, Calif.

Soccer (Athenas)

CMS (12-5-1, 9-2-1) improved its win steak to three matches overall and won both of its games during the last week. The week began with a 2-0 win at La Verne (Oct. 19) and the Athenas followed that up with a 2-1, home win over Redlands (Oct. 22). Senior midfielder Amy Johnson (CMC ’17) played a crucial role for the Athenas during the week and earned herself CMS Athlete of the Week honors. With two regular-season matches left on the schedule, the Athenas sit in second place in the SCIAC standings and have locked up the chance to host a SCIAC Postseason Tournament semifinal match on Pritzlaff Field on Wednesday, Nov. 2. CMS closes out its regular-season schedule with games against Whittier on Wednesday, Oct. 26 and at Chapman on Saturday, Oct. 29.

Soccer (Stags)

The Stags (10-6-1, 8-6-1) went 1-2 during the week but stayed in the hunt for a SCIAC Postseason Tournament bid. CMS was outscored 5-1 in losses to Chapman and at La Verne. The team then bounced back with a 1-0 win at Cal Lutheran on Oct. 24. The Stags’ game-winner against Cal Lu was scored by freshman Patrick Burke (CMC ’20) for his sixth of the season, while the CMS defense also recorded its sixth shutout. With the win, CMS added three points to its total, bringing it to 25 and into fourth place in the SCIAC. With just one game left to play, the Stags are two points in front of Pomona-Pitzer (7-5-2 SCIAC) at 23 and trail La Verne (9-4-1 SCIAC) by three. CMS hosts Whittier College (3-10-1 SCIAC) in the final game of the regular season at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29 at Pritzlaff Field.

Volleyball

After an incredible run of 18-straight wins to start the year, No. 3 CMS (20-2, 12-2) dropped a pair of road matches during the week and went 2-2 overall. La Verne handed CMS its first loss, a 3-2 decision on Oct. 18. Cal Lutheran then swept CMS 3-0 in Thousand Oaks on Oct. 21. The following day, CMS bounced back with a home sweep over Pomona-Pitzer. On Oct. 25, the Athenas added a 3-0 win over Caltech. CMS closes out the regular season with two more matches this week, before SCIAC Postseason Tournament play begins on Thursday, Nov. 3 at the site to be determined.

Water Polo (Stags)

A 10-7 win over Cal Lutheran on Oct. 22 highlighted a 1-1 week for the Stags (10-12, 2-1) with its loss coming at Whittier, 11-7 on Oct. 19. For its second win in SCIAC play, the Stags pulled away in the second half to beat the Kingsmen.
