Cross Country (Athenas)

The Athenas had the week off from competition and are next in action on Saturday, Oct. 15 as the team splits up for the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational (7:30 a.m.) and the Connecticut Invitational (11 a.m. EDT) in Waterford, Conn.

The Stags had the week off from competition and are next in action on Saturday, Oct. 15 as the team splits up for the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational (7:30 a.m.) and the Connecticut Invitational (11 a.m. EDT) in Waterford, Conn.

Football

Freshman Garrett Cheadle (HMC ’20) ran the game of his life, rushing for five touchdowns to help Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (4-0, 2-0) defeat Occidental College (0-4, 0-2) in a 45-28 road victory on Oct. 8. This is the Stags’ first 4-0 start since 2010. Cheadle broke out for 214 yards in 32 rushing attempts to make the D3football.com Team of the Week, while freshman Christian Curcio (CMC ’20) ran for 172 yards in 21 attempts and a touchdown. The Stags are in a three-way tie for first place in the SCIAC standings with Redlands and Pomona-Pitzer. Next up, the Stags host second-place Cal Lutheran (1-3, 1-1) at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15.

Golf (Athenas)

On the second day of the CMS Invite, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s golf team fired a 300, the lowest single-round score in program history. The tournament was played Oct. 8-9 at Los Serranos Country Club’s North Course from the gold tees. The Athenas won the tournament with a 608, 18 strokes lower than the second-place team, Whittier. Freshman Emma Kang (CMC ’20) posted a 74 in the second round for a 150 overall, putting her in a tie for the individual crown. The Athenas are headed to Prescott, Ariz., for the Embry Riddle Invitational at Talking Rock Country Club on Oct. 17-18 in what is the team’s final fall tournament.

Golf (Stags)

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s golf team finished its fall season with a friendly against La Verne at Los Serranos Country Club in Chino Hills on Oct. 7. The one-day tournament was played on the South Course, adjusted to be a par 72 at 6,992 yards. CMS totaled 289, beating La Verne’s 294. Sophomores Alex Wrenn (CMC ’19) and Sidney Cozier (HMC ’19) each came home with a 1-under 71. Cozier tallied the most birdies on the team with five — three on the front nine and a pair on the back. The first spring tournament for the Stags is Feb. 18-19.

Soccer (Athenas)

With three matches on the schedule, the Athenas (9-5, 6-2) went 2-1 to stay in second place in the SCIAC standings behind Pomona-Pitzer (8-1-2, 6-0-2). CMS defeated Chapman (5-1) at home on Oct. 5, lost at Pomona-Pitzer (1-0) on Oct. 8, and topped Saint Katherine (6-2) at home on Oct. 9. Freshman Kira Favakeh (HMC ’20) scored a hat trick in the win over Saint Katherine (Calif.). CMS travels to third-place Cal Lutheran on Wednesday, Oct. 12 for its next match.

Soccer (Stags)

The Stags (8-4-1, 6-4-1) registered a win vs. Caltech (3-0) on Oct. 3, a loss vs. Redlands (5-1) on Oct. 8, and a tie at Pomona-Pitzer (1-1) on Oct. 10 during the past week. CMS is now in a tie for fourth place in the SCIAC standings with Pomona-Pitzer. Senior Elijah Lichtenberg (CMC ’17) scored a goal and assisted on two others during the week. A road match at Occidental on Saturday, Oct. 15 is the next match for CMS.

Tennis (Stags)

The ITA Oracle Cup for a pair of Stags is next on the schedule, Oct. 13-16 in Surprise, Ariz. Nikolai Parodi (CMC ’20) will travel as the singles player and the pair of Parodi and senior Glenn Hull (CMC ’17) will represent the West in doubles. The ITA Oracle Cup takes the eight regional winners in singles and doubles from each of the small college divisions: NCAA Division II, Division III, NAIA, and junior college. The players in each division will play out to place. Then, the champions from each division will compete against each other for the Small College Super Bowl. The spring season for CMS begins on Feb. 25 with a home match against Bates (Maine).

Volleyball

The No. 2-ranked Athenas (16-0, 8-0) won at Redlands (3-1) on Oct. 4 and won at Pomona-Pitzer (3-0) on Oct. 8. CMS stands alone in first place in the SCIAC standings, two games ahead of Cal Lutheran. Junior setter Clara Madsen (CMC ’18) has been selected as the SCIAC Volleyball Athlete of the Week for the week of Oct. 3-9. She had 26 assists, three service aces and 14 digs against Redlands, and added 19 assists, nine digs and three service aces against Pomona-Pitzer. A home match vs. Chapman on Tuesday, Oct. 11 is the next match for CMS.

Water Polo (Stags)

In its first home matches of the season, the Stags (7-11) went 3-1 at Axelrood Pool in the annual Gary Troyer Tournament. CMS opened the tournament on Oct. 7 with a 12-8 loss to UC San Diego and then bounced back with an 8-7 win over Concordia (Calif.). On the second day, the Stags defeated Iona (N.Y.) (15-11) and Connecticut College (15-9). Senior Eric Bakar (CMC ’17) scored 10 goals over the weekend. The Stags have a pair of road matches on the schedule this week, including a match at LMU on Friday, Oct. 14 and the SCIAC-opener at La Verne on Sunday, Oct. 16.
