The cross country programs will take a breather this weekend before splitting off to compete at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational and Connecticut Invitational on Oct. 15.

Cross Country (Stags)

Four Stags finished within top-10 at the SCIAC Multi-Dual Meet in the 8K event, including Josh Sealand (HMC '17), Jesse Joseph (HMC '17), Garrett Ryan (CMC '17), and Kyle Lund (HMC '18). Sealand finished with a time of 26:03.39, while Joseph took third overall with a time of 26:15.81. Ryan took sixth place with a time of 26:28.68 and Lund was ninth, clocking in at 26:40.04. The cross country programs will take a breather this weekend before splitting off to compete at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational and Connecticut Invitational on Oct. 15.

Football

The football program is off to their first 3-0 start since 2010 after rattling the Whittier Poets 45-13 this past Saturday. Victor Bunce (CMC '18) had a brilliant performance, recording two punt return touchdowns, while Trey Reynolds (CMC '17) threw for 305 yards and a touchdown. The Stags’ defense was relentless in their ability to silence the Poets’ offense, recording 4 sacks and forcing two fumbles. Griffin Lazarus (CMC '17) put in a solid shift from the back, recording an interception and breaking up one passing play, while Bunce broke up two passes from the other side. The Stags will hit the road against Occidental next Saturday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m.

Golf (Athenas)

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team won their first event of the season, holding a comfortable lead over Chapman University and Occidental College at the CMS Tri Match at Los Serranos Golf Course on Sunday afternoon. The team scored 315 on the course while Chapman stroked 341 and Occidental scored 369. Sophomore Mary Bryan Owen stood on top of the leaderboard, stroking par on every hole but five holes to go 5-over 72. The team will return to Los Serranos Country Club next weekend on Oct. 8 and 9 for the CMS Invite. Saturday's tee-time will begin at 9 a.m. and Sunday's event will begin at 7:45 a.m.

Golf (Stags)

The Stag golf team placed seventh at the WNMU Fall Intercollegiate in Goodyear, Ariz. The tournament featured 20 programs, predominantly from NCAA Division II, and included three rounds over two days of competition. CMS improved with each round, ultimately shooting a 901 for the tournament. Alex Wrenn (CMC ’19) finished 18th of the 107 players. The Stags go head-to-head with La Verne on Friday, Oct. 7 at Los Serranos Country Club in Chino Hills.

Soccer (Athenas)

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s soccer team (7-4-0, 5-1-0) have played outstanding defense as they held Whittier College scoreless in a 1-0 victory this past Saturday. Katelyn Faust (CMC '17) scored the lone goal thanks to a combined assist from Laynee Laube (CMC '17) and Sarah Tocher (CMC '20). Jacey Coniff (HMC '18) and Emily Cassell (CMC '17) put in a solid shift on the defensive end while Kelly McConnell (HMC '17) had a key save in the 65th minute to record her 6th shutout of the season. The Athenas will host Chapman University on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m.

Soccer (Stags)

The Stags have struggled this past week, taking a tough 2-0 loss to La Verne last Wednesday before losing again to Chapman 2-1 on Saturday. The Stags were out-shot 16-10 by La Verne, and saw only three shots go on target. On Saturday’s game against Chapman, Mehron Abdi (CMC '17) scored the opening goal in the 4th minute, but the Stags lost their lead as the Panthers scored goals in the 28th and 38th minutes to come away with the victory. The Stags will host Caltech on Monday, Oct. 3 and Redlands on Saturday, Oct. 8, both at 7 p.m.

Tennis (Athenas)

In the weekend's ITA West Regional presented by Oracle, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team advanced two individuals and two doubles teams into the semifinals in the respective draws. Freshman Catherine Allen (SCR) won four matches including beating two teammates en route to the singles finals. Junior Kyla Scott (HMC) also had a strong showing. This concludes the non-traditional season for the Athenas, who will pick back up in February 2017.

Tennis (Stags)

Senior Daniel Morkovine (CMC) became the first player in Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis history to win the ITA West Regional in singles and doubles over the weekend. The Stags were the dominant team in the competition as the finals for both the singles and doubles draws were entirely comprised of CMS players. Morkovine paired with sophomore Julian Gordy (CMC) to take the doubles regional title.

Volleyball

The Athena volleyball team tacked on another two wins with a 3-0 victory at Caltech (25-19, 25-13, 25-12) and then beat Whittier 3-1 (25-7, 25-15, 19-25, 25-12) at home in Roberts Pavilion. Against Caltech, Kimmy Tuttle (CMC ’19) led with 10 kills and then Phoebe Madsen (CMC ’20) served up 14 consecutive points in the first set of the Whittier match. This week, CMS traveled to Redlands on Tuesday and won 3-1. The Athenas play Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Rains Center.

Water Polo (Stags)

At the Lancer Invite over the weekend, the Stags went 1-1 with an overtime win over Fresno Pacific 13-10 and then a close loss to the host, Cal Baptist 11-8. In that tournament, Noah Deer (CMC ’18) scored nine goals while goalie Rye Newman (CMC ’17) had 15 saves. On Saturday, the Stags traveled to UCLA and fell 17-4 to the No. 1 ranked team in the nation. On Friday and Saturday this weekend, CMS and Pomona-Pitzer host the annual Gary Troyer Tournament that features 20 teams from across the country.
