Basketball (Athenas)

La Sierra paid a visit to Roberts Pavilion for the season-opener and No. 25 CMS came away with a 77-48 win (Nov. 15). Over the weekend, CMS (1-2) traveled to St. Louis for a pair of games at Washington University. Chicago defeated CMS 64-36 (Nov. 18) in the first game and the trip concluded with a 66-49 loss against Wash U (Nov. 19). Against La Sierra, senior Kris Brackmann (CMC ’17) had an efficient game from the floor, finishing with 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting. The Athenas are back in Claremont this week with a pair of games as part of the David Wells Classic. The Athenas play Carleton (Minn.) at 5 p.m. Nov. 25 at Pomona-Pitzer’s Rains Center, followed by a home game against UC Santa Cruz at 3 p.m. Nov. 26.

Basketball (Stags)

CMS (2-0) started its season in strong fashion by virtue of winning both games on its weekend trip to Oregon. In the season-opener at George Fox (Nov. 18), CMS won 73-60. On the following day, CMS blew out Lewis & Clark 70-45 behind a stellar three-point shooting performance from junior guard Michael Scarlett (CMC ’18) who landed SCIAC Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week honors. The junior scored 24 points on 6-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc against Lewis & Clark. The Stags are back in Claremont this week with a pair of games as part of the David Wells Classic. CMS hosts Cal Maritime at 6 p.m. Nov. 25 and then plays Southwestern (Texas) at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 26 at Pomona-Pitzer’s Rains Center.

Cross Country (Athenas)

A 15th-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championships on Nov. 19 at Tom Sawyer Park in Louisville, Ky., concluded the season for the Athenas. The top-20 national finish is the seventh in a row for the Athenas. Junior Bryn McKillop (SCR ’18) placed ninth overall at 20:53.5 and improved 74 places over last year’s finish at nationals. As a team, CMS finished three places higher than its pre-championship poll placement.

Cross Country (Stags)

The men’s cross country team finished in fifth place at the NCAA Division III Championships on Nov. 19, for the highest result in program history, up two spots from last year. Senior Kyle Lund (HMC ’17) had the fastest finish for the Stags. He took eighth overall at 24:32.5. Teammate Joshua Sealand (HMC ’17) was right behind him for three-fourths through the race, but ended up falling back and into 13th place at 24:39.8.

Swim & Dive (Athenas)

In the first SCIAC multi-dual meet of the season, the Athenas easily defeated Whittier (232-66) and La Verne (232-64) on Nov. 19. Out of 16 events in the meet, Athena swimmers won 15. In individual events, CMS came away with three multi-event winners and that included a pair of freshmen in Liv Baker (CMC ’20 – 200 back and 200 IM) and Ivy Chen (HMC ’20 – 100 back and 100 fly). The SCIAC selected Chen as the Women’s Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week for her performances. The Winter Invite (Dec. 2-4) is next on the schedule for CMS. Dual-meet competition begins again in January.

In the finals, CMS lost a defensive-heavy match 7-4 to Pomona-Pitzer on Nov. 20 at Pasadena City College. The Stags wrapped up their season in second place in the SCIAC standings at 14 points (six points for regular season wins and eight points for second place in the tournament).
