Cross Country (Athenas)

The weather was not ideal for the Athenas at the NCAA West Regionals on Nov. 12 in Salem, Ore., at Bush’s Pasture Park, as they battled light showers in 56-degree temperatures and 18 miles-per-hour winds. Regardless, the Athenas grinded out a second-place team finish to earn a trip to the NCAA Division III Championships. The Athenas scored 86 points and were able to finish higher than last year’s regional winner, Willamette (Ore.). Three CMS runners finished among the top 25, including junior Bryn McKillop (SCR ’18), who saw significant improvement in her course time, taking fourth place at 22:10.3, after finishing in sixth at 22:36.0 two years ago. The Athenas close their season at the NCAA D-III Championship on Saturday, Nov. 19 at Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky. The women are scheduled to start their race at 8 a.m.

Cross Country (Stags)

The weather was not ideal for the Stags at the NCAA West Regionals on Nov. 12 in Salem, Ore., at Bush’s Pasture Park, as they battled light showers in 56-degree temperatures and 18 miles-per-hour winds. Regardless, the Stags grinded out a first-place team finish to earn a trip to the NCAA Division III Championships. The Stags won their field quite handily, scoring 43 points, leading runner-up Occidental (81 points) by 28. The Stags saw all seven of their runners finish among the top 25, including three in the top 10. Seniors Joshua Sealand (HMC ’17) finished second overall at 25.47.7, while his classmate Kyle Lund (HMC ’17) finished less than a second behind him (25:48.3) to take third place. The Stags close out their season at the NCAA D-III Championship on Saturday, Nov. 19 at Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky. The men’s race begins at 9 a.m.

Football

In the final game of the 2016 season, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (7-2, 5-2) football team beat its cross-campus rivals Pomona-Pitzer 23-21 on Nov. 12 at Merritt Field. This win marked the fourth over the Sagehens for the CMS graduating class of 2017. The Stags wrapped up their second-consecutive season with a 7-2 record and second-place finish in the SCIAC. Trailing just 17-14, the Sagehens attempted an onside kick but it did not travel far enough for the kicking team to recover without being penalized. Senior Connor Stastny (CMC ’17) then seized the opportunity for heroics for CMS. He fielded the onside kick and ran back the kick for a touchdown to seal the win.

Soccer (Athenas)

By virtue of its 1-0 win over previously unbeaten Pacific Lutheran in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Nov. 12, CMS (17-6-1, 11-2-1) set a program record for wins in a season. The win also served as CMS’ first in the NCAA Tournament since 2009. In the second round on Nov. 13, the Athenas ran out of steam, losing 6-0 at Pomona-Pitzer. In the PLU win, senior Emily Cassell (CMC ’17) netted the winning goal just two minutes into the opening half, her only goal of the season.

Swim & Dive (Athenas)

CMS hosted Occidental College in the home opener at Axelrood Pool on Nov. 11. In what was the first SCIAC meet of the season, the Athenas won the competition 198-37. For the Athenas, freshman Jocelyn Crawford (CMC ’20) had a fantastic home debut, breaking the 100-yard backstroke pool record at 57.99. Crawford was named as the SCIAC Women’s Swimmer of the Week. CMS travels to Whittier on Saturday, Nov. 19 for a dual meet against Whittier and La Verne. Diving begins at 10 a.m., swimming events start at 11 a.m.

Swim & Dive (Stags)

CMS hosted Occidental College in the home opener at Axelrood Pool on Nov. 11. In what was the first SCIAC meet of the season, the Stags won the competition by a lopsided score of 193-38. Freshman Henry Limm (HMC ’20) broke the pool record in the 400-yard individual medley, taking first place in the heat with a time of 4:06.55. Sophomore Aaron Lutzker (HMC ’19) also had a strong race, taking first place in the 100 breaststroke with a record-setting time of 57.98. CMS travels to Whittier on Saturday, Nov. 19 for a dual meet against Whittier and La Verne. Diving begins at 10 a.m., swimming events start at 11 a.m.

Volleyball

The No. 3 CMS volleyball team (23-4, 14-2) lost a heartbreaker in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to No. 8 Colorado College in four sets (15-25, 25-21, 25-14, 25-22). The NCAA Regional match was played Nov. 11 in Richardson, Texas, on the campus of UT Dallas. The teams had clashed in the second round in the NCAA tournament in 2013 and 2014 with split results, but this first-round matchup went to the Tigers and cut the Athenas’ hopes of an NCAA run short. Against Colorado College, CMS took the first set rather easily, 25-15 and looked in control before Colorado College responded with wins in three-straight sets. Senior outside hitter Nicole Kerkhof (CMC ’17) closed out her stellar career with an 18-kill, 19-dig performance. The four losses are the fewest in a season in program history, and the year began for the Athenas with an 18-match winning streak.

Water Polo (Stags)

Heading into the SCIAC Championships (Nov. 18-20) at Pasadena City College, CMS (14-15, 6-2) is seeded third. The Stags wrapped up regular-season play with a 1-1 record during the week that saw the team stumble in a 13-8 loss to Pomona-Pitzer (Nov. 9) and earn a 16-6 bounce-back win over Caltech (Nov. 12) on Senior Day. Senior Ellison Taylor (CMC ’17) averaged three goals scored during the week and had four scores against Pomona-Pitzer. The SCIAC Championships start on Nov. 18 for CMS with an 11:45 a.m. match against Occidental at Pasadena City College. Please check back on the men’s water polo schedule webpage for more details as the week progresses.

Five-College Club Sports

Women's Rugby

Claremont traveled to San Diego over the weekend for the annual Scrum-by-the-Sea tournament. The Foxes dropped their first game to UC Irvine (19-3), but rebounded quickly with a 25-12 victory over a big Arizona State B-side. The momentum continued into Sunday with an 18-7 victory over a tough and determined Sacramento State team. The win earned the team a 2-1 record on the weekend and a fifth place finish in Division II of the tournament. Try scorers for the weekend included Emma Dubery (SCR ’19), Camille Sacristan (SCR ’18) and Joey Yamada (CMC ’18). Particularly strong all weekend was the play of rookies Elena Seifert (CMC ’19), Ali Parker (SCR ’20), Sophie Baker (SCR ’20), Marisa de Souza (HMC ’19) and Michelle Ramirez (SCR ’20). The Foxes next return to action when league play begins on January 28 at Long Beach State.
