Cross Country (Athenas)

The cross country program had last week off from competition and has been preparing for the NCAA West Regionals, scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 12. The event is in Salem, Ore., and the top finishers from regionals will be invited to compete in the NCAA D-III National Championships that take place on Nov. 19 in Louisville, Ky.

Football

On Senior Day, CMS (6-2, 4-2) defeated Chapman 17-6 in a defensive battle on Nov. 5 at Zinda Field. The Stags led throughout the game after building a 10-0, second-quarter lead. Freshman Christian Curcio (CMC ’20) stepped up and scored two touchdowns for a total of 77 offensive yards to lead the Stags on offense. Junior Robby Weissenfels (CMC ’18) blocked a punt that junior Geno Quaid (CMC ’18) recovered to set up a CMS field goal, just a few of the defensive highlights for CMS. The Stags now stand in a tie for third place in the conference standings with Cal Lutheran. CMS and Pomona-Pitzer square off in their annual Sixth Street rivalry game on Saturday, Nov. 12 in the season finale for both teams. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Pomona-Pitzer’s Merritt Field.

Soccer (Athenas)

After surviving against third-seeded Cal Lutheran 3-2 in overtime in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament semifinals on Nov. 2, the top-seeded Athenas cruised to a 4-0 win over Chapman in the conference championship match on Nov. 5 at Pritzlaff Field. As conference tournament champion, CMS (16-5-1, 11-2-1) earned the SCIAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championships, the first for the Athenas since 2013. CMS now faces Pacific Lutheran in an NCAA first-round matchup starting at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12 at Pomona-Pitzer. During the conference tournament, Laynee Laube (CMC ’17) scored three goals and had one assist. She scored the game-winner in overtime against Cal Lutheran.

Soccer (Stags)

CMS (11-7-1, 9-6-1) capped off the season with its first SCIAC Postseason Tournament appearance since 2013. CMS’ season came to a close in the SCIAC semifinals with a 2-0 loss at Redlands on Nov. 3. All told, the Stags won five more matches than last season and moved from sixth to fourth in the end-of-season conference standings.

Swim & Dive (Athenas)

CMS hosted its annual alumni meet on Nov. 5. Looking forward, CMS begins SCIAC competition on Friday, Nov. 11 against Occidental. The meet is at Axelrood Pool beginning at 4 p.m.

Volleyball

For the fourth straight season, CMS (23-3, 14-2) has qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships. CMS received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament as the SCIAC regular-season co-champion and postseason tournament runner-up. In the SCIAC Tournament, second-seeded CMS defeated No. 3 La Verne 3-1 in Claremont on Nov. 3. Then in the tournament finals, No. 1 Cal Lutheran swept CMS on Nov. 5 for the tournament championship and automatic bid to the NCAAs. In the win over La Verne, junior Shelbi Stein (CMC ’18) tallied a match-high 18 kills. CMS now heads to Dallas and the University of Texas at Dallas for an NCAA Tournament first-round match against Colorado College on Friday, Nov. 11 at 3:00 p.m. CST. The Athenas are part of an eight-team regional hosted by Texas-Dallas from Nov. 11-13.

Water Polo (Stags)

CMS (13-14, 5-1) went 2-1 during the week with a 13-11 win over Chapman (Nov. 2), a 9-7 win at Redlands (Nov. 5) and an 11-5 loss to Air Force (Nov. 6). The Stags are now tied for second place in SCIAC play with Whittier, and a crucial conference match against first-place Pomona-Pitzer looms on the schedule. The Stags host the Sagehens on Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. Junior Noah Deer (CMC ’18) put together a strong week with 11 goals, including five against Chapman and four against Redlands and earned himself SCIAC Men’s Water Polo Athlete of the Week recognition.
