Cross Country (Athenas)

Despite being faced with unpleasant conditions, the Athenas finished first at the SCIAC Championships (33 points) on Oct. 29 at Prado Park in Chino. Junior Bryn McKillop (SCR ’18) was the highest-placing Athena at third overall, clocking in at 23:31.25, and senior Carmen Mejia (SCR ’17) followed right behind her at 23:31.33. The cross country program will prepare for the NCAA West Regional in two weeks on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 10 a.m. The event will be held at Salem, Ore., and the top finishers will be invited to compete in the NCAA D-III National Championships.

Cross Country (Stags)

Also faced with unpleasant conditions, the Stags finished first at the SCIAC Championships (47 points) on Oct. 29 at Prado Park to narrowly defeat rival Pomona-Pitzer (51 points) in Chino. While senior Joshua Sealand (HMC ’17) managed to finish among the top three, taking second overall at 25:54.49, freshman Thomas D’Anieri (CMC ’20) stepped up and grinded through with his best run of the season, finishing fifth overall at 26:25.25. The cross country program will prepare for the NCAA West Regional in two weeks on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 10 a.m. The event will be held at Salem, Ore., and the top finishers will be invited to compete in the NCAA D-III National Championships.

Football

The Stags (5-2, 3-2) moved back into the win column with a 34-23 victory over La Verne on Oct. 29 at Zinda Field. Senior quarterback Trey Reynolds (CMC ’17) threw for 255 yards and a season-high four touchdowns. On the defensive end, four players recorded a sack, including senior Jake Glasser (CMC ’17), who also forced a fumble. The Stags are currently tied for third place in the conference standings with their final home game of the regular season up next, a Senior Day matchup against Chapman starting at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5.

Soccer (Athenas)

The Athenas went 2-0 during the week with a 2-1 home win over Whittier (Oct. 26) and a 4-3 road win at Chapman (Oct. 29) in the regular-season finale. Sophomore Sarah Malott (CMC ’19) and junior Wren Osler (SCR ’18) provided the game-winning goals against Whittier and Chapman, respectively. With the wins, CMS (14-5-1, 11-2-1) secured the No. 2 seed in the SCIAC Postseason Women’s Soccer Tournament and hosts No. 3 Cal Lutheran (12-4-4, 6-4-4) at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2. The winner of the match advances to the finals of the SCIAC Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 5 with the time and site yet to be determined.

Soccer (Stags)

With its season and a postseason berth on the line, the Stags recorded a pair of 1-0 wins to secure a spot in the SCIAC Postseason Men’s Soccer Tournament. CMS won at Cal Lutheran (Oct. 24) and at home against Whittier (Oct. 29) to lock up the fourth seed in the SCIAC Tournament and the program’s first postseason bid since 2013. The defense stepped up for the team’s sixth and seventh shutouts of the season. Senior defender Cole Mora (CMC ’17) earned SCIAC Men’s Soccer Athlete of the Week honors for his play. Freshman Patrick Burke (CMC ’20) and senior Ryan Karle (CMC ’17) scored the Stags’ goals during the week. As the No. 4 seed for the conference tournament, CMS (11-6-1, 9-6-1) travels to top-seeded Redlands on Thursday, Nov. 3 for a 7 p.m. match. The winner advances to the tournament finals scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 5 with the site and time to be determined.

Swim & Dive (Athenas)

In the first swimming and diving meet of the year, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps traveled to UC San Diego on Oct. 29 and faced some stiff competition from the NCAA Division II opponent as CMS finished in second with 92 points. The 2016 SCIAC Athlete of the Year, Stephanie Doi (CMC ’17), was among the first three finishers in two relays and one individual event. Looking forward, CMS hosts its annual Alumni Meet on Saturday, Nov. 5 and then begins SCIAC competition on Nov. 11 against Occidental.

Swim & Dive (Stags)

In the first swimming and diving meet of the year, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps traveled to UC San Diego on Oct. 29 and faced some stiff competition from the NCAA Division II opponent as CMS finished in second with 111 points. Junior Victor Ginelli (CMC ’18) was the lone event winner for the Stags during the meet, while CMS finished in with the top three fastest times in 14 other events (Stags and Athenas). Looking forward, CMS hosts its annual Alumni Meet on Saturday, Nov. 5 and then begins SCIAC competition on Nov. 11 against Occidental.

Volleyball

CMS (22-2, 14-2) swept its way through the final week of the season with wins over Caltech (Oct. 25), at Whittier (Oct. 28) and Redlands (Oct. 29). In doing so, the Athenas won a share of the regular-season conference championship, the fourth in program history, and secured the No. 2 seed in the upcoming SCIAC Postseason Tournament. (Cal Lutheran is also 14-2 in SCIAC play.) Against Redlands, junior Mikena Werner (SCR ’18) continued to lead the team with her superlative defense and passing. She recorded 19 digs in the match and has a 5.73 digs-per-set average, good for the top-25 in the country, individually. CMS has its sights set on the SCIAC Postseason Tournament now. On Thursday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m., the No. 2-seed Athenas host No. 3-seed La Verne in Roberts Pavilion. The winner advances to the tournament finals scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 5 with the site and time to be determined.

Water Polo (Stags)

The Stags (11-13, 3-1) went 1-1 with a 22-2 loss at USC and a 15-10 win at Occidental. Junior Graham Fullerton (CMC ’18) and senior Eric Bakar (CMC ’17) each scored three times to lead the Stags’ offense against Oxy. CMS currently sits in a three-way tie for second place in the SCIAC standings (with Whittier and Redlands) at the midpoint of the conference season. This week, CMS hosts Chapman at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, and travels to Redlands on Saturday, Nov. 5 for an 11 a.m. match.
