=========== Fall Sports – Women================

Women’s Cross Country
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps cross country team ran in two events this past week, splitting their squads between the Cal State San Bernardino Invite and the Stanford Invitational. At Stanford, the CMS women’s team placed 11th in the final standings with Bridget Blum (CMC ’16) once again being the first Athena to cross the finish line at 21:53. At the CSUSB 6K, the Athenas were led by Roselyn Cantu (CMC ’18), who finished first for CMS and 11th overall with a time of 23:38.  The Athenas will stay local this week, competing in the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on Oct. 3.

Women’s Golf (Spring Sport)
The Athenas opened up their fall season with a third-place finish at the Embry-Riddle Invitational in Prescott, Ariz. on Sept. 27-28. Arizona Christian won the event by nine strokes over Embry-Riddle, while CMS came in 12 shots off the pace. Junior Taylor Kain-Godoy (CMC ’17) tied for second place with a three-round score of 19-over par, six shots behind the tournament winner from Biola University. The Athenas are on the course again Oct. 3-4 for the CMS Quad at Upland Golf Club.

Women’s Soccer
The Athenas (3-4-2, 1-2-1) played in two close matches last week, losing a 2-1 decision to La Verne at home, and coming from behind to force a 1-1 draw at Cal Lutheran. Shortly after Cal Lutheran scored to take a one-goal lead on Saturday, Ellen Berkley (CMC ’18) netted her first goal of the year to tie the match, beating the goalkeeper high. Kelly McConnell (HMC ’17) made eight saves along the way, including two in overtime to keep the score tied. A Sept. 30 match at Occidental and an Oct. 3 home contest against Chapman round out this week, with both being key SCIAC matches for CMS.

Volleyball
It was a tough week for the CMS women’s volleyball team as it lost two of three matches, falling to La Verne (3-2) and Cal Lutheran (3-0) on the road, but beating Whittier (3-0) at home. Nicole Kerkhof (CMC ’17) and Crystal Anderson (CMC ’18) combined for a total of 57 kills, leading the Athenas in points for the week. Going forward, CMS (12-4, 2-2) will be looking for better success in SCIAC matches as they host Occidental on Oct. 2 and visit Chapman on Oct. 3.

====================== Fall – Men========================

Men’s Cross Country
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps cross country team ran in two events this past week, splitting their squads between the Cal State San Bernardino Invite and the Stanford Invitational. CMS placed ninth overall at Stanford, with Zorg Loustalet (HMC ’16) clocking in first at 24:35, the third-fastest time in school history. Fellow Harvey Mudd junior Kyle Lund had the big breakthrough race of the day at Stanford, dropping his all-time best an incredible 82 seconds to record a time of 24:43.2 and place only eight spots behind the two-time All-American Loustalet. Danyon Anderson (CMC ’18) crossed first for the Stags in the CSUSB 8K at 27:04 with Hunter Olsen (CMC ’18) three seconds behind him. The Stags will stay local this week, competing in the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on Oct. 3.

Football
The well-rested Stags (1-1) will get back into action this week at Chapman on Oct. 3 looking to avenge last-year’s 33-23 loss. Shane Pico (CMC ’18) leads the Stags in rushing, averaging 93 yards through their first two games and also leads the conference in rushing touchdowns (3). It will be the first SCIAC game of the year for CMS as it looks to build off its 27-7 victory over Lewis & Clark (Ore.) over two weeks ago.

Men’s Golf (Spring Sport)
The Stags wrapped up their fall season with a second-place finish at the Embry-Riddle Invitational in Prescott, Ariz. on Sept. 27-28. Arizona Christian edged out CMS by one stroke for the tournament win as CMS finished the event at 9-over par. CMS sophomore Johnny Brandt (CMC ’18) won the event by five strokes and finished his three rounds at 7-under par, with a low round of 6-under, 66 coming in the second round. The first competition of CMS’ spring season is on Feb. 6-7 at Redlands Country Club in the conference’s first tournament of the year.

Men’s Soccer
CMS took on Occidental and Pomona-Pitzer last week with both matches ending in scoreless draws. Goalkeeper Daniel Cui (CMC ’18) recorded his third and fourth shutouts of the year, stopping six shots against the Tigers and five shots against the Sagehens. It was the third-consecutive shutout for Cui, who now is second in the SCIAC in the category. The Stags (2-3-3, 2-2-2) will look to keep Cui’s streak alive this week when they play Cal Lutheran at home on Sept. 30 and Chapman on the road on Oct. 3.

Men’s Water Polo
In its lone match of the week, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s water polo team traveled to the campus of UCLA, where the Stags dropped a 12-4 decision to the Bruins. Adam Hilborn (CMC ’16) scored twice, improving his season-scoring total to eight goals. Overall, Tanner Cullen (CMC ’16) leads the team in goals (32) and has scored in 10 out of 11 matches. The 4-7 Stags will finally play at home this week, matching up against Penn.-St. Behrend, Fresno Pacific and Johns Hopkins and another team in the Gary Troyer Tournament on Oct 2-3.
