=========== Fall Sports – Women================

Women’s Cross Country
Both CMS cross country teams competed in the SCIAC Mulit-Dual Meet over the weekend in La Mirada. Running against all eight other SCIAC schools, the Athenas finished first overall and had four finishers in the top six, including Bridget Blum (CMC ’16), Jen Lehr (SCR ’17), Roselyn Cantu (CMC ’18) and Laura Broderick (SCR ’18). The Athenas will get the opportunity to race for a 25th conference title next week in the SCIAC Championship meet at Prado Park in Chino.

Women’s Soccer
The Athenas’ hot streak continued last week, as they shutout Pomona-Pitzer and La Verne by identical 1-0 scores to extend their winning streak to six matches. Darrah Shields (CMC ’16) has been the only Athena to score against the Sagehens this year and both times she has given CMS 1-0 victories. Against the Leopards, Remi Edwards (CMC ’19) netted her second of the year and goalkeeper Kelly McConnell (HMC ’17) went the full 90 minutes for another shutout. Now in sole possession of first place in the conference, the 9-4-3 (6-2-2) Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s soccer team has four matches remaining on their regular season schedule, featuring two at home this week against Cal Lutheran and Occidental on Oct. 21 and Oct. 24.

Women’s Tennis (Spring Sport)
Katie Kuosman
(CMC ’17) and Caroline Ward (CMC ’16) played in the ITA Small College National Championships but fell short of a title, claiming third place. The duo lost in the semifinal round to the eventual tournament champions from Wesleyan in two sets, 6-3 and 6-4. Kuosman and Ward went on to defeat a pair of competitors from Mary Washington in the third place match and will now have time to prepare for the spring season which kicks off Feb. 6 at Cal Lutheran.

Volleyball
An up-and-down week for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s volleyball team saw them defeat Pomona-Pitzer 3-1 before losing a heartbreaker in five sets to No. 14 Southwestern. The Athenas then went on to sweep Caltech and No. 21 La Verne, avenging their road loss to the Leopards from earlier this season. Shelbi Stein (CMC ’18) lead the team against La Verne with nine kills and Mariah Rigg (CMC ’18) added six and finished the contest with a .545 hitting percentage. CMS (18-5, 8-2 SCIAC) will travel to Whitter on Oct. 20 followed by a huge battle with No. 6 Cal Lutheran at the Linde Activities Center on Oct. 23.

====================== Fall Sports – Men========================

Men’s Cross Country
Both CMS cross country teams competed in the SCIAC Mulit-Dual Meet over the weekend in La Mirada. In the 8K event, the Stags finished second out of the nine total SCIAC schools with Zorg Loustalet (HMC ’16), Evan Molineux (CMC ’16) and Jack Wilson (CMC ’16) finishing in the top five. The Stags will get the opportunity to race for a 14th conference title next week in the SCIAC Championship meet at Prado Park in Chino.

Football
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football team beat the University of Redlands for the first time since 2003, and have now beaten the top two teams in the SCIAC conference from last season. CMS won the game on a Shane Pico (CMC ’18) rushing touchdown with just over 30 seconds to play for the 25-23 victory. The Stags earned over 400 yards of total offense for only the second time this year, 266 of which occurred through the air countered by 140 on the ground. Now just one game out of first place, the 3-2 (2-1) Stags have another home game coming up this weekend as they take on the Occidental Tigers on Oct. 24.

Men’s Soccer
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s soccer team played in a pair of SCIAC home matches last week, as they fell to Redlands 2-0 and came away with a scoreless draw against La Verne. Daniel Cui (CMC ’18) got the six-save shutout against La Verne, his second in the last three matches. The Stags now sit sixth in the conference and will look to gain ground toward a potential SCIAC tournament berth this week against Chapman at Pritzlaff Field on Oct. 21 and Cal Lutheran on the road Oct. 24.

Men’s Tennis (Spring Sport)
Skyler Butts
(CMC ’16) earned third place in the ITA Small College National Championships singles tournament, thanks to a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Gustavus Adolphus' Mohanad Al-Houni in the third place match. Butts came up short in the semifinals but earned ITA All-American honors for the third-straight year, ending his fall season with an 8-1 record in singles matches. The CMS men’s tennis team will next compete in the spring where they will host Brandeis on Feb. 20.

Men’s Water Polo
The Stags won their SCIAC opener over the weekend as they beat La Verne 13-6. Tanner Cullen (CMC ’16) led the team in goals with three, and Daniel Cogan (CMC ’16), Eric Bakar (CMC ’17) and Adam Hilborn (CMC ’16) each scored twice. CMS has now beaten La Verne in 18 of the two teams’ last 19 matches dating back to the 2007 season. The Stags continue SCIAC play this week against Cal Lutheran on Oct. 21 and Occidental on Oct. 24. The 2015 Alumni Game will take place after the 11 a.m. matchup with the Tigers.
