Women’s Tennis
In the team quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Championships, Bowdoin (Maine) swept the doubles matches and went on to a 5 -1 victory over CMS on May 23 at Western Michigan University’s Sorensen Courts. The lone point of the match for CMS came at No. 4 singles, when Kyla Scott (HMC ’18) earned the straight-set, 6-4, 6-0 victory over Tess Trinka. CMS ended its team season at 21-5 overall and has finished in the quarterfinal round or higher every year since 2011. In the doubles tournament of the NCAA Championships, Katie Kuosman (CMC ’17) and Caroline Ward (CMC ’16) finished as the national runners-up.
Women’s Track & Field
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s team finished in fifth place at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships in Waverly, Iowa, the highest finish in program history at 33 points. During the day, CMS totaled six All-America performances highlighted by a national championship in the women’s 100-meter dash by Tyra Abraham (SCR ’18). The previous highest team finish by the women was seventh place in 1998. This also bests the highest finish by either the men’s or women’s team as the men’s highest finish was sixth place. Abraham won the first national championship in the women’s 100 in CMS history.

Men’s Tennis
ITA National Senior Player of the Year and senior captain Skyler Butts (CMC ’16) closed his career with a national championship in singles at the NCAA Division III Tennis Championships. In front of a huge crowd, Butts came away with a three-set win (6-2, 6-7 (0), 6-2) over Branden Metzler of host Kalamazoo College (Mich.) for the national title on May 28 at Stowe Stadium. This is the first NCAA Division III singles championship for Butts, who finished as the national runner-up in 2015. Butts became the sixth singles national champion in CMS men’s tennis program history and second straight. Earlier in the week, during the NCAA Division III Team Championships, the Stags made it all the way to the quarterfinals, but lost 5-2 to the University of Chicago on May 23. As a team, the Stags end the season at 27-5 and have registered top-10 finishes at Nationals 11 seasons in a row, and 13 of the last 14 seasons.
Men’s Track & Field
Four athletes from the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s team competed at the NCAA Championships in Waverly, Iowa. Joshua Sealand (HMC ’17 – 1,500 and 5,000) in the 1,500, trailed the pack for the first two laps and then quickly transitioned to the front with 800 meters to go. Sealand pushed the pace for the entire third lap but was ultimately overtaken by a trio of runners from St. Olaf (Minn.) to finish in seventh at 3:50.96, for his second-consecutive All-American honor in the men’s 1,500. The Stags won the program’s 23rd conference championship this season.
