TOP STORY: Stags Golf wins 2016 NCAA Division III national championship

========== Spring – Women============

Softball
The 2016 season came to an end for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team, which went 3-2 at NCAA Regionals in Spokane, Wash., but couldn’t avoid defeat in an elimination game against Linfield (Ore.). CMS opened the tournament with a loss to George Fox (Ore.) but won three-straight with their season on the line against Whitworth (Wash.), George Fox and Linfield, before they fell 6-5 in Game Two against the Wildcats. The Athenas captured their fourth SCIAC Tournament Championship and wrap up the year with a 37-10-1 overall, 24-4 SCIAC record. The team’s 37 wins are a program record.

Women’s Tennis
The Athenas advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals with a pair of victories in the NCAA Regionals over the weekend. CMS blanked Trinity (Texas) 5-0 before holding on to beat Pomona-Pitzer 5-3 in the final round of Regionals. Kyla Scott (HMC '18) clinched the win at No. 4 singles with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 victory to send the Athenas to Kalamazoo, Mich., where they will take on Bowdoin (Maine) in the NCAA Quarterfinals on May 23. Women’s Track & Field
Both CMS track and field teams had the past week off after participating in the Occidental Invitational a week ago. The Stags and Athenas will compete in the Redlands Final Qualifier May 18-19 as they prepare for the NCAA DIII Championships in Waverly, Iowa, taking place May 26-28.

Men’s Golf
The CMS men’s golf program won its first NCAA National Championship on May 13 at the Midvale Country Club in Penfield, N.Y. CMS led throughout the tournament and won with a four-day score of 1,198, six strokes ahead of second-place Huntingdon College (Ala.). Freshman Alex Wrenn (CMC ’19) led all Stags, shooting 295 (+8) and finished tied for second among all competitors in the individual standings. The Stags’ championship was featured on Fox 11 LA and The Golf Channel and wraps up a remarkable year for the 2016 men’s golf team.

Men’s Tennis
A pair of victories in the NCAA Regionals sends the Stags to the NCAA Quarterfinals in Kalamazoo, Mich. CMS defeated UC Santa Cruz 5-0 in Round Two of the Regionals and fell behind 3-0 to Texas Tyler in Round Three. However, the resilient Stags bounced back in singles against Texas-Tyler with senior captain Skyler Butts (CMC ’16) earning the final point in a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 No. 1 singles win. The Stags will travel to Kalamazoo, where they will take on the University of Chicago in the NCAA Quarterfinals on May 23. More information can be found on the host webpage.
