=============== Winter – Women===================
Women’s Basketball
In the NCAA Selection Show on Feb. 29, the Athenas learned they are headed to Texas-Tyler to face Trinity (Texas) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at 3 p.m. (PST) Friday, March 4. The Athenas were the SCIAC regular-season champs at 15-1 and then won the SCIAC Postseason Tournament, beating Redlands 70-47 (Feb. 25) in the semifinal, and then Cal Lutheran 75-48 (Feb. 27) in the final. This is the third-consecutive regular-season championship, tournament championship and NCAA berth for CMS. Center Kailee Severt (CMC ’18) scored 18 points in the win over Cal Lutheran to lead CMS.
Women’s Swimming & Diving
On Feb. 26-27, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps diver Carli Lessard (HMC ’17) competed at the NCAA Division III Region 2 Diving Championships in Grinnell, Iowa. Lessard placed 11th (369.10) in the 1-meter event out of 14 competitors. The weekend concluded for Lessard with a fifth-place finish (420.05) in the 3-meter dive out of 13 competitors. The NCAA Division III Championships will be March 16-19 in Greensboro, N.C., for the two Athena swimmers (Kelly Ngo [CMC ’17] and Stephanie Doi [CMC ’17]) who qualified.
====================== Spring – Women========================
Women’s Golf
The Athenas had last week off from competition but on Feb. 29-March 1, the Athenas played in the Cal State San Marcos Cougar Invitational. CMS finished in third place at the SCIAC #1 Tournament from Feb. 20-21.
Women’s Lacrosse
The first two matches of the season were key conference road matchups. CMS went 1-1 with an 11-10 win at Chapman (Feb. 27) and an 8-5 loss to Pomona-Pitzer (Feb. 24) in the season-opener. In the win at Chapman, midfielder Corie Hack (CMC ’19) and Carly Keeney (CMC ’19) each scored a team-high three goals. On Wednesday, March 2, the Athenas host Whittier in the home opener on Zinda Field starting at 7 p.m.
Softball
In its only two games of the week, CMS swept Cal Lutheran (8-0 and 12-4) in Thousand Oaks on Feb. 27. In the first game of the doubleheader, Briana Halle (CMC ’18) hit a pinch-hit grand slam in a seven-run, fifth inning for the Athenas. CMS is 6-3-1 overall and atop the SCIAC standings at 5-1 with an important pair of home doubleheaders upcoming this weekend: March 4 (Redlands) and March 5 (Pomona-Pitzer).
Women’s Tennis
Dominant wins over Bates (Maine) (9-0), Point Loma (8-1), Caltech (8-1) and at Whittier (9-0) wrapped up a 4-0 week for the Athenas, who have now won five matches in a row and are 6-1 overall and 3-0 in SCIAC play. Next on the schedule for the Athenas is a home match on March 8 against Carnegie Mellon (Pa.).
Women’s Track & Field
At the 20th annual Rossi Relays on Feb. 27 at the Burns Track Complex, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps track and field teams excelled with a handful of CMS and meet records and top-10 marks. Vaiva Palunas (SCR ’17) won the discus and broke the CMS and SCIAC event record with a 46.42/152-03 effort. Emily Bassett (CMC ’18) was fourth (second collegiate) in the hammer and broke the CMS record with a 53.30/174.10 throw. CMS next competes on March 5 in the SCIAC multi-dual meet against La Verne, Chapman, Caltech and Occidental.
Women’s Water Polo
CMS went 0-3 during the week with losses at home to Hawaii (20-3) and on the road at Whittier (14-6) and Cal State Monterey Bay (13-7). Attacker Roxy Kiessling (CMC ’18) scored a team-high seven times during the week, including three apiece against Whittier and CSUMB. This is a busy week for the Athenas, with four matches over two days at the Claremont Convergence Tournament (March 4-5). The Athenas are now 1-5 on the season.

Men’s Basketball
In the regular-season finale, CMS defeated Chapman 77-73 to clinch fourth place in the conference and earn a bid to the SCIAC Postseason Tournament. CMS then turned around and as the No. 4 seed, played at top-seeded Chapman three days later in the SCIAC Tournament semifinals on Feb. 26. Chapman defeated CMS 71-61 to eliminate CMS from the postseason and end CMS’ season at 13-12, the program's 19th-straight winning season. Center Shelby Lane (CMC ’16) finished his career with a team-high 18 points and seven rebounds in the loss.
Men’s Swimming & Diving
On Feb. 26-27, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps diver Patrick Quarberg (CMC ’18) competed at the NCAA Division III Region 2 Diving Championships in Grinnell, Iowa. On Day 1 in the men’s 3-meter competition, Quarberg finished in third out of six divers with a score of 443.45. Daniel Goldstein of host Grinnell won the event. The next day in the 1-meter boards, Quarberg placed fourth (405.80). The difference between fourth and second was just under 13 points. Goldstein also took the 1-meter event. The NCAA Division III Championships will be March 16-19 in Greensboro, N.C., for the six Stags swimmers who qualified.
====================== Spring – Men========================
Baseball
The CMS offense was silenced in a three-game sweep against La Verne over the weekend. La Verne defeated CMS 13-3 (Feb. 26) at La Verne and then topped CMS (6-2 and 4-2) in both games at Arce Field on Feb. 27. In the 4-2 loss, starting pitcher Sam Baughman (CMC ’17) went seven innings and allowed just three earned runs. CMS is now 3-8 overall and 2-4 in SCIAC play, which puts the team in seventh place. CMS has a three-game series against Occidental on March 4-5, with the Friday single game at Arce Field.
Men’s Golf
The Stags will have a long break before their next tournament, March 17-20 in Jekyll Island, Ga., for the Collegiate Invitational.
Men’s Tennis
Three matches and three 9-0 wins for the No. 1-ranked Stags (Bates, Point Loma and Christopher Newport [Va.]) on Feb. 26 and Feb. 27. Max Macey (CMC ’17) was one of five Stags to win two matches, as CMS shut out No. 21 Bates (Maine). Then on Saturday, Bryan Mehall (HMC ’16) was one of five Stags to win three matches. CMS is now 5-0 on the season. Next on the schedule is the Pacific Coast Doubles tournament March 4-6 in La Jolla.
Men’s Track & Field

The men’s distance medley relay team of Evan Molineux (CMC ’16), Ryan Jones (HMC ’16), Ben Iten (HMC ’19) and Joshua Sealand (HMC ’17) finished in second in the meet (10:06.55) and second all-time at CMS. CMS next competes on March 5 in the SCIAC multi-dual meet against La Verne, Chapman, Caltech and Occidental.

Men’s Lacrosse
The Claremont Cougars traveled to Biola University on Saturday. Led by scorers Alexander Malmlund CMC'19 (5 goals), Jack Severtson CMC'19 (4), Kaegan Ingrasci Pitzer'17 (3), and Logan Miller CMC'19 (3), the Cougars achieved a 19-7 victory over the Eagles. Goalie Jeffrey Allen Pomona'19 had an amazing 70 percent save rate. The victory game ball went to Alexander Malmlund.
Men’s Rugby
The men’s rugby team remained undefeated following a 62-5 victory over UC San Diego on Feb. 27. The team will next play on Friday, March 4, at Azusa Pacific University. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. The winner of this match will win the conference championship.
Men’s Volleyball
The Claremont men’s club volleyball team won three of four matches Sunday in its league tournament against the North Region of the Southern California Collegiate Volleyball League (SCCVL). After an early close loss to league-leader Loyola Marymount (10-1), the Kangaroos went on a run with wins over USC, Cal State Channel Islands, and ended the day with a big victory over UC Santa Barbara. Now 6-2 in league play, the Kangaroos will be playing another three matches at the Rains Center on Pomona College’s campus Sunday, March 6.
