=============== Winter – Women===================

Women’s Basketball
The Athenas (15-1 SCIAC) beat Pomona-Pitzer 67-48 on Feb. 18, but fell 58-51 at Redlands on Feb. 20. Nevertheless, the conference champion Athenas have now turned their attention to the upcoming SCIAC Postseason Tournament as the top seed. Kailee Severt (CMC ’18) finished the regular season as the scoring leader for the Athenas, averaging 13.1 points per game. Before this week, CMS had wrapped up the No. 1 seed throughout the SCIAC Postseason Tournament. CMS hosts Redlands in the SCIAC Tournament semifinal at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 25 at Harvey Mudd College’s Linde Activities Center.

Women’s Swimming & Diving
The CMS swimming and diving teams competed in the SCIAC Championships over the weekend. The Athenas finished second to Pomona-Pitzer with a four-day score of 964. Among the highlights were Kelly Ngo (CMC ’17) took the conference championship in the 100 free; Emily McKinnon (CMC ’17) earned first in the 200 breaststroke; and the relay team of Ngo, Stephanie Doi (CMC ’17), Riley Hoffman (CMC ’19) and Emma Stacy (SCR ’19) came out on top in the 400 free relay. In addition, Doi won SCIAC Female Athlete of the Year. The NCAA Diving Preliminaries will take place Feb. 26-27 in Grinnell, Iowa, and the NCAA Division III Championships will be March 16-19 in Greensboro, N.C., for the qualifying athletes.

Women’s Golf
The Athenas took third place in their first SCIAC tournament of the young season, scoring 646 over two days. Kelly Ransom (CMC ’19) finished third overall and first among all CMS shooters at 154 with Cara Brinster (CMC ’18) joining her in the top 10 (162). The CMS women’s golf squad will be back at it this weekend for a two-day event at the St. Mark Golf Club in San Marcos for the CSUSM Cougar Invitational.

Women’s Lacrosse
After defeating St. Mary’s 13-12 in an exhibition a week ago, the CMS women’s lacrosse team has had more time to prepare for the 2016 season as it wraps up preseason training. The Athenas’ first game will be Feb. 24 at Pomona-Pitzer, followed by a Feb. 27 contest at Chapman. CMS will first play at home March 2 against Whittier.

Softball
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team (4-3-1, 3-1 SCIAC) split with La Verne in its doubleheader on Feb. 20. CMS defeated the Leopards 8-0 in the first game as Anna Gurr (CMC ’18) pitched five shutout innings, giving up only four hits. Reeve Grobecker (CMC ’16) and Carly Roleder (CMC ’18) went 2 for 3 with an RBI. The Athenas will travel to Cal Lutheran for a doubleheader with the Regals on Feb. 27.

Women’s Tennis
CMS dominated Brandeis 9-0 in its first home match of the year. The No. 1 duo of Caroline Ward (CMC ’16) and Katie Kuosman (CMC ’17) earned an 8-3 win in doubles, and Kyla Scott (HMC ’18) and Jessie Cruz (CMC ’19) posted the Athenas’ most convincing doubles win at 8-1. Five of six singles matches were won in straight sets, with the lone exception being the No. 1 contest between Ward and Haley Cohen, with Ward prevailing by scores of 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. The 2-1 (1-0) Athenas will next host Bates (Maine) on Feb. 26.

Women’s Track & Field
The CMS track and field program competed in its first full meet of the 2016 season on Feb. 20 in the Pomona-Pitzer All-Comers event. Tyra Abraham (SCR ’18) won the 100-meter dash at 12.14 and Emily Bassett (CMC ’18) earned first in the hammer throw (50.65m/166-02). Other notable finishes for the Athenas included Carmen Mejia (SCR ’17), who finished second in the 1,000 meters (2:59.88) and the 4x100 relay team, which earned second at 48.89. CMS will host the Rossi Relays on Feb. 27 with the field events beginning at 11 a.m.

Women’s Water Polo
The CMS women’s water polo team had the past week off to prepare for its Feb. 25 home opener against Hawaii. The Athenas are off to a 1-2 start to the 2016 season but won’t officially open SCIAC play until March 19 at home against La Verne. CMS will be hosting the annual Convergence Tournament March 4-5 at Axelrood Pool.

Men’s Basketball
The Stags (13-11, 8-8 SCIAC) went 2-1 over the last nine days to finish the regular season in fourth place in the conference standings. A 77-73 road win at Chapman in a must-win game on Feb. 23, clinched a SCIAC Postseason Tournament berth for the Stags. Forward Jason Harrington (CMC ’16) scored a team-high 13 points in the win over first place Chapman. CMS travels back to Chapman on Friday, Feb. 26 for the first round of the SCIAC Tournament.

Men’s Swimming & Diving
The CMS swimming and diving teams competed in the SCIAC Championships over the weekend. The Stags won their ninth-straight conference title thanks to a narrow 1,086-1,044 victory over Pomona-Pitzer. A few highlights on the final day included two meet records for the CMS men’s team by Noah Deer (CMC ’18) in the 100 free with a record time of 44.94 and by Deer, Alex Poltash (CMC ’16), Matthew Williams (CMC ’17) and Joseph Hinton (CMC ’16) in the 400 free relay at 3:00.87. The NCAA Diving Preliminaries will take place Feb. 26-27 in Grinnell, Iowa, and the NCAA Division III Championships will be March 16-19 in Greensboro, N.C., for the qualifying athletes.

Baseball
The CMS baseball team had a 2-2 week, highlighted by a pair of wins over Pomona-Pitzer in a doubleheader Feb. 20. The Stags combined to score 32 runs in the wins, taking the first game 21-13 and the second 11-7. Jack Witte (CMC ’16), MacKenzie Menthen (CMC ’16) and Trey Smith (CMC ’18) each had four RBIs in Game 1, while Smith repeated the feat in Game 2. Smith had grand slams in both games. Menthen and Sam Baughman (CMC ’17) earned wins on the mound for the Stags. CMS (3-5, 2-1 SCIAC) will continue conference play this week with a trio of games in a home-and-home series against La Verne.

Men’s Golf
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s golf team earned second place in the East/West Bay Area Invitational in Livermore over Feb. 15-16. CMS finished seven strokes behind first-place Saint Martin’s (Wash.) and had Jonathan Shaw (CMC ’18, fourth), Johnny Brandt (CMC ’18, tied for eighth) and Matt Shuman (CMC ’18, tied for 10th) finish in the top 10. The Stags will have a long break before their next tournament, March 17-20 in Jekyll Island, Ga., for the Collegiate Invitational.

Men’s Tennis
In its first matches of 2016, the CMS men’s tennis team defeated Brandeis 9-0 and Concordia 8-1 in a doubleheader on Feb. 20. Senior captain Skyler Butts (CMC ’16) earned his 100th and 101st career singles wins, while head coach Paul Settles won his 300th and 301st matches of his CMS career. Butts and Daniel Morkovine (CMC ’17) won doubles matches and each won their respective singles competitions throughout the day. The Stags will host Bates (Maine) on Feb. 26 before a Feb. 27 home doubleheader with Point Loma Nazarene and Christopher Newport (Va.).

Men’s Track & Field
The CMS track and field program competed in its first full meet of the 2016 season on Feb. 20 in the Pomona-Pitzer All-Comers event. Evan Molineux (CMC ’16) won the only event of the day for the Stags, finishing the mile in 4:11.28. Josh Sealand (HMC ’17) set the CMS record for the 3,000 meters at 8:30.63, good for a fourth-place finish. In addition, Michael Wagenveld (CMC ’18) earned second place in the pole vault (4.70m/15-05.00). CMS will host the Rossi Relays on Feb. 27 with the field events beginning at 11 a.m.

====================== Club Sports ========================

Men’s Lacrosse
The Cougars defeated Occidental in decisive fashion (18-2) in their lone match of the week. This week, Claremont plays at Biola on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 1 p.m. Wednesday’s road match at USC has been postponed.

Men’s Rugby
Claremont defeated Cal Lutheran 43-14 on Feb. 20 at home on Parents Field to stay undefeated on the season. The Lions travel to UC San Diego on Feb. 27 for their next match.

Women’s Rugby
The Claremont Women's Rugby Team fought hard Saturday against UC-Riverside, ranked second in the nation. Despite the Foxes’ Celia Dattel (PZ'16) scoring the first try of the game, the Foxes fell 73-5.  The game was a learning experience for the young Foxes team with strong performances by Emma Dubery (CMC’19), Rachel Sun (HM’19) and Ellie MacDonald (SC’18). The Foxes (2-2) will play UC Irvine at Irvine next Saturday.
