=============== Winter – Women===================
Women’s Basketball
The first place Athenas (17-4, 12-0 SCIAC) continued their dominance in conference play last week with a pair of wins over Whittier (72-67) and Occidental (56-48). Sophomore center Kailee Severt (CMC ’18) had two of the best games of her CMS career, totaling 38 points and nine rebounds. In addition, Severt posted a 54 percent shooting percentage and connected on 9 of 15 three pointers. The Athenas’ win streak now sits at 12 games with upcoming matchups at La Verne (Feb. 9) and at home against Cal Lutheran (Feb. 13) on the schedule for this week.
Women’s Swimming and Diving
The CMS swimming and diving teams split with Pomona-Pitzer in the final meet before the SCIAC Championships. The Athenas won eight of the 16 events but lost by a score of 152-146, their first SCIAC loss in 13 years. Junior Stephanie Doi (CMC ’17) was the only women’s triple winner, earning a top-10 time in the 200 butterfly while also capturing first in the 100 butterfly and 200 IM events. The Stags (8-0 SCIAC) and Athenas (7-1 SCIAC) have two weeks to prepare for the SCIAC Championships, which will take place in La Mirada from Feb. 18-21.
====================== Spring – Women ========================
Softball
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team split its season-opening doubleheader with Vanguard over the weekend. The Athenas fell 11-4 in the first game but rebounded to take the second by a score of 2-1. Freshman infielder Abigail Metsch (SCR ’19) drilled a two-run homer in the sixth inning of the second game against the Lions to seal the win. CMS (1-1) has its first pair of SCIAC games this week at Chapman on Feb. 12, preceding a home doubleheader with Pacific (Ore.) on Feb. 13.
Women’s Tennis
In their first match of the year, the Athenas dominated the Cal Lutheran Regals 9-0, adding to an SCIAC winning streak that spans nearly five years. CMS won all six singles matches in straight sets, including 6-0, 6-0 wins by sophomore Bria Smith (CMC ’18). In doubles, the Athenas’ top pair of Caroline Ward (CMC ’16) and Katie Kuosman (CMC ’17) captured an 8-3 victory. On Feb. 13, the 1-0 Athenas will travel to UC San Diego, where they will look to avenge a 6-3 loss from 2014, the last time the two teams met.
Women’s Water Polo
The CMS women’s water polo team beat Concordia in its first match of the season last week but followed up that with a two losses to Azusa Pacific and Long Beach State for a 1-2 start to 2016. Sophomore attacker Jessica Gaffney (CMC ’18) scored three times in the fourth quarter and had a four-goal game in the win over Concordia. The Athenas have more than two weeks off before their next match on Feb. 25, which will be their home opener against Hawaii at 7 p.m.

Men’s Basketball
A 1-1 record last week keeps the Stags in the hunt for a SCIAC Postseason Tournament berth. After falling to the high-powered offense of Whittier, CMS earned a 69-66 overtime win at Occidental, avenging an overtime loss earlier this season to the Tigers. Sophomore guard Michael Scarlett (CMC ’18) sank what turned out to be the game-winning three-pointer with just over a minute and a half remaining in overtime. Scarlett posted 19 points and shot 75 percent on the night with five three’s. CMS holds a 9-10 overall record, 4-7 SCIAC and remains seventh in the SCIAC with five games remaining on the 2015-16 schedule. This week, the Stags will travel to La Verne on Feb. 10 and take on Cal Lutheran at home on Feb. 13.
Men’s Swimming and Diving
The CMS swimming and diving teams split with Pomona-Pitzer in the final meet before the SCIAC Championships. The Stags beat the Sagehens in 11 out of 16 events for a final score of 174-124. Two men’s swimmers and a relay team captured top-10 times: Tyler Welty (CMC ’19) in the 100 and 200 breaststroke, Aaron Lutzker (HMC ’19) in the 200 breaststroke, and the team of Matthew Williams (CMC ’17), Zach Alleva (CMC ’16), Alex Poltash (CMC ’16) and Noah Deer (CMC ’18) in the 200 medley relay. The Stags (8-0 SCIAC) and Athenas (7-1 SCIAC) have two weeks to prepare for the SCIAC Championships, which will take place in La Mirada from Feb. 18-21.
Men’s Golf
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s golf team took home first place in its first SCIAC tournament of the year with a two-day score of 627. Sophomore Jonathan Shaw (CMC) earned first place among all competitors in the tournament, shooting a 4-over par 76 on Day One and an even-par 72 on Day Two for a 148 total. Shaw finished six strokes better than senior Kethan Reddy (CMC), who tied for second. The Stags will next compete at the East/West Bay Area Invitational in Livermore, Calif., from Feb. 14-16.
====================== Club Sports ========================
Men’s Lacrosse
The Claremont Cougars opened their 2016 season on Feb. 6 but lost to Cal State Long Beach 12-11. The Cougars will host a pair of games this week against Washington State on Feb. 12, and UC Irvine on Feb. 13 at the South Athletic Field at Pomona.
Men’s Rugby
On Feb. 6, Claremont defeated Cal State Northridge 55-12. The Lions now sit atop the conference alone in first place. The team will next be in action on Feb. 13 away vs. University of California Riverside.
The women’s rugby team had a team scrimmage on Jan. 30 at Parents Field in Claremont. The Foxes host UC Irvine on Feb. 28 on Parents Field.
