Athletics Week In Review (Full Version)

=============== Winter – Women===================

Women’s Basketball
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s basketball team beat Chapman in its SCIAC opener last week, but couldn’t get past No. 3 George Fox. Alyson Young (CMC ’17) came off the bench to lead all Athenas in scoring in the 58-52 win over the Panthers, posting 18 points and seven rebounds, while playing 18 minutes. Against George Fox (Ore.), CMS led at the half but wasn’t able to hold on for the win despite a 19-point effort from Kailee Severt (CMC ’18) in a 64-63 loss. The 5-3 (1-0) Athenas won’t play again until back-to-back home games Dec. 29-30 against Lewis & Clark (Ore.) and Smith (Mass.).

Women’s Swim and Dive
Select swimmers from the swimming and diving teams competed in the Winter Invite in South Gate over the weekend. For the Athenas, Lauren Rosenberger (CMC ’18) finished third in the 1,650 freestyle event, while Riley Hoffman (CMC ’19) posted season-best times in the 200 freestyle, 200 medley and 100 backstroke. Ice Limchantra (HMC ’19) also posted season-best times in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke. The teams will next participate in the Cal Baptist Distance on Jan. 8 and will host Occidental on Jan. 9.

====================== Winter – Men========================

Men’s Basketball
The 6-2 CMS men’s basketball team has a good chunk of time to rest up and prepare for its Dec. 29 matchup at Concordia (Calif.). The Stags defeated San Diego Christian 77-76 last week and are currently on a six-game winning streak. CMS has outscored its opponents by an average of 15.3 points during the streak and currently average 72.3 points per game. Michael Scarlett (CMC ’18) leads the team in scoring and Shelby Lane (CMC ’16) leads in rebounds and blocks.

Men’s Swim and Dive
Select swimmers from the swimming and diving teams competed in the Winter Invite in South Gate over the weekend. For the Stags, Cory Johnson (HMC ’16) earned second place in the 400 individual medley and Aaron Lutzker (HMC ’19) fell just under the NCAA B-cut time for the 200 breaststroke at 2:05.24, and now ranks fifth-fastest in CMS history for that event. The teams will next participate in the Cal Baptist Distance on Jan. 8 and will host Occidental on Jan. 9.
