Coach Arce Memorial Service Information: A memorial service celebrating the life of William “Bill” Arce, founding CMS Athletics Director, is scheduled for Sunday, May 1 at Claremont McKenna College. The service will begin at 1 p.m. at McKenna Auditorium, followed by a reception at the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum at 2:30 p.m. All are invited to join the Arce family and CMC in remembering the legacy of Bill Arce as a coach, mentor, teacher, and role model.
============ Spring – Women===============
Women’s Golf
A pair of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golfers finished in the top-5 to help lead CMS to a second place finish at the 2016 SCIAC Championships and a second place finish in the overall conference standings. CMS (939) finished behind Redlands (929) in both the final tournament and the final conference standings. Freshman Kelly Ransom (CMC) finished in fourth place overall (231), seven shots behind individual medalist Caroline Ordian of Redlands. She closed the tournament with her best round (and the Athenas' best round) of the event, a 3-over par 75. Sophomore Maya Bhat (CMC) came away in fifth place (236).
Women’s Lacrosse
With a 14-9 win at Redlands (April 20) and 14-7 home victory over Occidental (April 23), the Athenas locked up the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye for the SCIAC Championships. Midfielder Katie Hill (CMC ’18) scored eight times in the two matches to lead the team and she had four goals on four shots in the win over Occidental. By virtue of locking up the two-seed for the SCIAC Championships, CMS hosts a semifinal match at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 30 on Zinda Field against an opponent yet to be determined.
Softball
In three games, the Athenas went 2-1 with a doubleheader, shutout sweep of Whittier on April 23 (3-0 and 9-0) and a 2-0 loss at La Verne on April 24 in a rain make-up game. In the 9-0 win over Whittier, designated player Briana Halle (CMC ’18) went 3-for-3 with five RBI, and Shannon O’Neill (CMC ’16) got the win, pitching four scoreless innings. With four SCIAC games left in the regular season, CMS is tied with La Verne for first place (21-3) in the conference standings. CMS hosts Chapman (April 29) and Occidental (April 30) this week in the final tune-ups before the SCIAC Tournament (May 6-7, location TBD).
Women’s Tennis
At the 116th annual Ojai Valley Tournament over the weekend, the Athenas had two participants (Caroline Ward [CMC ’16] and Kyla Scott [HMC ’18]). Ward participated in the Independent College/Division III singles event and made the quarterfinals in the 64-player field. She defeated Lana Rinaldi of Division I Grand Canyon University (Ariz.) 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 in the Round of 32 and Mae Coyiuto of Pomona-Pitzer 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in the Round of 16 before losing to top-seeded Erin Walker of Abilene Christian (Texas) 7-5, 6-1 in the quarters. In doubles, Ward and Scott won their opening match 6-0, 6-2, but lost 4-6, 6-3, 10-4 in the quarterfinals. The second-place Athenas (15-4, 6-1 SCIAC) return to dual-match play on April 28 at home against La Verne at 6 p.m.
Women’s Track & Field
The track and field teams had the week off from competition to prepare for the SCIAC Championships, which are April 29-30 at Occidental.
Women’s Water Polo
The women’s water polo team’s season came to a close with a fifth-place finish at the SCIAC Championships, held April 22-24 at Redlands. CMS got bumped into the consolation bracket with a 10-8 loss to Chapman in the opening round. On the following day, the Athenas bounced back with a 9-6 win over Occidental in the consolation semifinals and then concluded the weekend with a 9-7 win over Cal Lutheran for fifth place. The season concludes for the Athenas with a 9-18 record, 6-5 in SCIAC play. Attacker Roxy Kiessling (CMC ’18) put in a team-high 13 goals in the three matches, including six against Occidental.

Baseball
CMS went 1-2 last week in its home-and-home series against Whittier. The Stags broke out the bats in its 13-1 win at Whittier on Friday. Outfielder Trey Smith (CMC ’18) hit for the cycle and was a perfect 5-for-5 with three RBI and four runs scored in the win. Heading into SCIAC round-robin play, the Stags (9-24, 7-17 SCIAC) are in eighth place with four games remaining in the season. CMS hosts Occidental (April 27) and then takes on Pomona-Pitzer (April 30) and Chapman (May 1) on the road this week.
Men’s Golf
When the final scorecards were turned in, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team had moved from fourth to first place and run away from the field to win the SCIAC Championships by 13 strokes on April 26 at Oak Valley Golf Course. CMS also won the overall conference championship, the 11th in program history and second in the last three seasons under head coach Bim Jollymour. By virtue of winning the SCIAC Championships, CMS earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships scheduled for the Midvale Country Club and Mendon Golf Club in Rochester, N.Y. from May 10-13. CMS finished 14-under par (274) in the final round and 3-over par (867) in the tournament on the par-72 course. Sophomore Matt Shuman (CMC) led the charge for CMS with eight birdies and 10 pars for a third round, 8-under, 64. His 64 was the lowest round for any golfer at the SCIAC Championships and helped Shuman move up from 13th after 36 holes to second place after Day 3. He finished at 2-under par (214) overall, four strokes behind individual medalist John McCord of Redlands (210).
Men’s Tennis
Senior captain Skyler Butts (CMC ’16) and junior Daniel Morkovine (CMC ’17) defended their D3 doubles title, and Butts won his first D3 singles title at the 116th Ojai Valley Tournament, which concluded on Sunday. Twelve Stags participated in the 48 singles and 24 doubles teams event, which featured student-athletes from nine schools. CMS travels to La Jolla for a nonconference match against UC San Diego at 2:30 p.m. April 30. The Stags then host the SCIAC Championships from May 6-8.

Men’s Rugby
The Claremont Colleges won the PacWest Regional Championship over the weekend with wins over the University of Denver (48-16) in the Round of 16, and New Mexico Highlands (37-22) in the regional finals. Claremont has now advanced to the National Small College Rugby Organization (NSCRO) Champions Cup National Championships (Final Four) on April 30 and May 1 at Infinity Park in Glendale, Colo. Claremont takes on Eastern Connecticut State University in the semifinals at noon (MST) April 30. Then on May 1, Claremont will face either the University of Southern Indiana or Mount St. Mary’s University in the championship match or third-place match, depending on results from April 30.
