Athletics Week In Review (Extended Version - Word)

====================== Fall – Women========================

Women’s Soccer
The Athena soccer team went 2-0 last week, beating La Verne (2-1) and Occidental (2-1) to remain undefeated in SCIAC play. Against La Verne, Emily Cassell (CMC ’17) scored the game-winner off a corner kick from Isabel Lester (CMC ’15). Darrah Shields (CMC ’16) and Makella Brems (CMC ’17) each had goals for the Athenas in the game vs. Occidental. CMS (7-2-1, 4-0 SCIAC) goes on the road this week to play Redlands on Oct. 1 and Chapman on Oct. 4.

Women’s Tennis
The Athena tennis team was represented with ten singles players and five doubles teams in the USTA/ITA Small College West Regionals hosted by Pomona-Pitzer over the weekend. Caroline Ward (CMC ’16) won the singles tournament, and then teamed up with Katie Kuosman (CMC ’17) to win the doubles tournament. In the singles tournament, second-seeded Ward won five matches over three days to earn the West Region title. Next up for Ward and Kuosman is the Small College Nationals, Oct 9-11 in Sumter, S.C.

Women’s Golf
The Athena golf team competed in the Embry-Riddle Invitational in Prescott, Ariz. The team finished in second place, just seven strokes behind CS San Marcos. The Athenas had the lowest combined score after the first round. Marissa Suehiro (CMC ’15) shot lowest for CMS with rounds of 76, 79 and 81. This tournament concludes the fall competition for the Stag golf team.

Volleyball
The Athena volleyball team was 2-1 last week, beating Whittier (3-1) on Tuesday and then Pomona-Pitzer (3-1) at home on Saturday night, but losing to Cal Lutheran (3-0) the day before. In the three matches, Nicole Kerkhof (CMC ’17) recorded 41 kills, 21 of which were against Pomona-Pitzer. Megan Coleman (CMC ’15) tallied 66 digs during the week, averaging 6 digs per set. The Athenas go up against Occidental Sept. 30 and then play Redlands at home at 6 p.m. Oct. 4.

Women’s Cross Country
The Athena cross country team finished fifth among non-Division I teams and first for all Division III programs at the Stanford Invitational. Sara Mostatabi (CMC ’15) ran 22:10 to lead the Athenas with a 45th-place finish in the 330-runner field.  Freshman Bryn McKillop (SCR ’18) led a strong underclass group in 22:40.  Senior Taia Wu (CMC ’15, 23:04) was the lone upperclassman in the group of seven that finished in a 51-second spread.  She was followed by sophomores Caroline Willian (CMC ’17, 23:10) and Jen Lehr (SRC ’17, 23:19), freshman Breanna Sewell (CMC ’18, 23:34) and sophomores Anna Shepard (CMC ’17, 23:46), Stephanie LaFace (CMC ’17, 23:50) and Rachel Mow (HMC ’17, 23:54). The rest of the team competed at the CS San Bernardino Invitational and finished in third place. The entire team will compete at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational this Saturday, Oct. 4.

====================== Fall – Men========================

Football
The Stag football team did not compete last week. CMS (1-1) hosts Chapman at 1 p.m. Oct. 4.

Men’s Soccer
The Stag soccer team was 2-0 with two shutout wins last week over Caltech (7-0) and Whittier (4-0). Michael Wagenveld (CMC ’18) scored three goals against Caltech for his first collegiate hat trick. Taylor Lemmon (CMC ’16) fired in two of his own vs. Whittier. The Stags (4-1-1) face Occidental (6-3, 3-3 SCIAC) on Wednesday, Oct. 1 and return home to play Redlands (5-5, 4-2 SCIAC) on Oct. 4 for a 7 p.m. nightcap.

Men’s Cross Country
The Stag cross country team finished third among non-Division I teams at the Stanford Invitational, behind DII No. 4 Chico State and DII No. 16 UC San Diego. Zorg Loustalet (HMC ’16) led the Stags to one of their best-ever team times with a personal best of 24:28 while finishing 31st in the 362-runner field.  The scoring five averaged 25:00.8 as Garrett Ryan (24:45, CMC ’17), Alex Lombardo (CMC ’17, 24:59,), Alex Mauro (CMC ’15, 25:26) and Jack Wilson (CMC ’16, 25:26) also turned in personal-best times.  A CMS record nine Stags broke 26:00 with Sam Pitcavage (CMC ’15,25:26), Nico Banks (CMC ’17, 25:43), Justin Jones (HMC ’15, 25:56) and Kevin Huang (HMC ’18, 25:56) turning in the fastest times ever recorded for a CMS sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth runner. The rest of the team competed at the CS San Bernardino Invitational and finished in third place. The entire team will compete at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational this Saturday, Oct. 4.

Men’s Water Polo
The Stag water polo team played only one game last week against Pepperdine. The Stags lost to the Waves, a ranked Division I team, 13-6. Noah Deer (CMC ’18) had a team high of two goals while James Kelly (CMC ’15) recorded six saves on the night, four of which were in the second quarter. The Stags (1-9) play their first home game at 6 p.m. against Iona on Thursday, Oct. 2 before co-hosting the Gary Troyer Memorial Tournament Oct. 3-4.

Men’s Tennis
The Stag tennis team was represented by 12 singles players and five doubles teams in the USTA/ITA Small College Regionals over the weekend. Glenn Hull (CMC ’17) won the singles title, beating teammate Nik Marino (CMC ’15) in the final. Warren Wood (CMC ’15) and partner Marino made it to the doubles final but came up short against a Pomona-Pitzer duo. CMS advances to compete at the USTA/ITA Small College Nationals on Oct. 9-11 in Sumter, S.C.

Men’s Golf
