Athletics Week In Review (Extended Version - Word)

=========== Fall – Women=============

Women’s Soccer
The Athena soccer team went 1-1 last week, losing in the last few seconds to Occidental (3-2) and then shutting out Redlands (2-0) at home on Senior Day. The seniors recognized were: Gabriela Ozer (CMC ’15), Molly Freed (SCR ’15), Isabel Lester (CMC ’15), Samantha Kunz (CMC ’15), Ashley Barnhill (CMC ’15), Claire Shum (SCR ’15), Elizabeth Augustine (CMC ’15) and Sara Tweedy (HMC ’15). The current senior class has a 41-29-9 record over the last four seasons and one SCIAC tournament championship in 2013. Against Redlands, Tweedy and Ozer scored their second career goals each to lead the Athenas to victory. CMS (12-5-1, 9-3 SCIAC), the current No. 1 seed in SCIAC, plays the final two regular-season games against Chapman at home at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29 and then at Pomona-Pitzer at 11 a.m. Nov. 1.

Volleyball
The Athena volleyball team was 3-0 last week with victories over Occidental (25-17, 25-17, 25-16), Pomona-Pitzer (25-11, 25-20, 25-21) and No. 2 Cal Lutheran (25-21, 25-21, 20-25, 23-25, 15-12). CMS is currently ranked No. 20 in the nation in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association poll. In the match against Cal Lu, CMS held the Regals to a sub-.100 hitting percentage and recorded 12.5 team blocks. Nicole Kerkhof (CMC ’17) led the team with 33 kills during the week for a .300 average. Megan Coleman (CMC ’15) recorded 68 digs over the three matches, placing her in the top 25 nationwide for digs per set (5.84). Mariah Rigg (CMC ’18) had 11 blocks, including two big solo blocks in the Cal Lu match. The Athenas (21-5, 12-2 SCIAC) have a break until they travel to Redlands (2-18, 2-12 SCIAC) on Friday night, Oct. 31. CMS returns home the next day to round out the regular season with a 6 p.m. match vs. Chapman (7-16, 6-7 SCIAC).

Women’s Cross Country
The Athena cross country team did not compete last week. The team next races on Nov. 1 at the SCIAC Championships at Prado Park in Chino. The race begins at 9 a.m. for the men and 9:45 a.m. for the women.

Women’s Swimming and Diving
The Athena swimming and diving team opened its season against UC San Diego, falling to the Tritons 183-110. In the swimming, the Athenas won one event, a tight race with Kelly Ngo (CMC ’17) winning the 50-yard freestyle by .01 seconds in a quick 24.45. Maia Presti (SCR ’17) took the 1-meter diving event, inching past the 200-point mark with a score of 200.10. Fellow sophomore Carli Lessard (HMC ’17) led the 3-meter field, scoring 198.60 on the high board. CMS will be back in action next Saturday at the Pomona-Pitzer Relays with competition slated to begin at 2 p.m.

====================== Fall – Men========================

Football
The Stag football team came up short against Occidental on Saturday, losing 21-14. CMS scored two second-half touchdowns, but could not pull out the win. Running back Nick Gott (HMC ’17) rushed for 89 yards while wide receiver Ryan Farney (CMC ’16) had five catches for 68 yards. Quarterback Trey Reynolds (CMC ’17) rushed for 96 yards and threw for 116 yards in the game. Having played its last two games on the road, CMS is back home on Zinda Field at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1 against Cal Lutheran.

Men’s Soccer
The Stag soccer team was 0-2 last week with losses to Redlands (4-3, OT) and Occidental (3-1). CMS (7-7-1, 6-7-1) is now in sixth place in SCIAC, unable to make up the ground to break into the top four teams and compete in the conference tournament. Alex Censullo (CMC ’17) scored in each game, assisted by Hogan Marhoefer (CMC ’16) and Elijah Lichtenberg (CMC ’17).

Men’s Cross Country
The Stag cross country team did not compete last week. The team next races on Nov. 1 at the SCIAC Championships at Prado Park in Chino. The race begins at 9 a.m. for the men and 9:45 a.m. for the women.

Men’s Water Polo
The Stag water polo was 2-0 last week, continuing SCIAC play. CMS beat Cal Lutheran (15-8) and Occidental (14-8). In the game against Cal Lu, eight Stags contributed to the scoring and goalkeeper James Kelly (CMC ’15) recorded 14 saves. Utility Noah Deer (CMC ’18) scored twice in the fourth quarter to secure the 15-8 victory. CMS (7-12, 3-0 SCIAC) faces Redlands (5-17, 1-2 SCIAC) Oct. 29 and then hosts Caltech (7-13, 0-2 SCIAC) at 11 a.m. Nov. 1.

Men’s Swimming and Diving
The Stag swimming and diving team opened its season against UC San Diego, falling to the Tritons 183-112. All-American James Stevick (CMC ’15) won both men’s diving events with Zone qualifying scores. The 2014 SCIAC Athlete of the Year scored 309.50 on the 1-meter board and set a personal best of 355.42 to win the six-dive, 3-meter competition. In the swimming races, the Stags received a boost from Matthew Williams (CMC ’17), who dominated the 100-yard backstroke. Williams’ time of 51.29 was nearly three seconds ahead of second place. CMS will be back in action next Saturday at the Pomona-Pitzer Relays with competition slated to begin at 2 p.m.
