Athletics Week In Review (Extended Version - Word)

=========== Fall – Women=============

Women’s Soccer
The Athena soccer team went 1-1 last week, beating Sixth Street Rival Pomona-Pitzer 3-0 but then falling 3-1 to Cal Lutheran. In the win over the Sagehens, Makella Brems (CMC ’17) scored her seventh goal on the season. Brems assisted Sydney Smith (CMC ’18) just seven minutes later to give CMS a 2-0 halftime lead. Darrah Shields (CMC ’16) scored the Athenas’ third and final goal. Against Cal Lutheran, Katelyn Faust (CMC ’17) scored off a deflection by the keeper. CMS (9-4-1, 6-2 SCIAC) next hosts Whittier (1-11-1, 0-8 SCIAC) on Oct. 15 and La Verne (5-6-1, 3-4-1 SCIAC) on Oct. 18. Both games are at 7 p.m.

Volleyball
The Athena volleyball team played only one match last week, beating Chapman 3-1 (17-25, 25-14, 25-22, 25-21). In the match, Audrey Breitwieser (CMC ’16) led the team with 13 kills, and Megan Coleman (CMC ’15) recorded 29 digs. The Athenas (16-4, 7-1 SCIAC) travel to Caltech on Oct. 14 and then host La Verne at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17.

Women’s Cross Country
The Athena cross country team did not compete but will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 17 at the SCIAC Multi-Dual meet. The meet will take place at La Mirada Regional Park in La Mirada with the first race beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Women’s Tennis
Doubles pair Caroline Ward (CMC ’16) and Katie Kuosman (CMC ’17) won the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships over the weekend in Sumter, S.C. The score for the final match was 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. Two weeks ago, the team won the West Regional, qualifying them for the championships. With this win at the Division III level, Ward and Kuosman competed in the “Super Bowl,” which pit the winner of each level of the Small College Championships (NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community Colleges) against each other. The pair won their first match but then was beat by the doubles team from Division II Barry University in the championship match.

====================== Fall – Men========================

Football
The Stag football team faced La Verne and scored six touchdowns in a 40-24 win on Homecoming weekend. Nick Gott (HMC ’17) ran for 173 yards and scored two touchdowns. Andrew Segre (CMC ’18) rushed for 61 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Trey Reynolds (CMC ’17) threw for 232 yards and the final touchdown. On defense, A.J. Herrera (CMC ’16) had five solo tackles and James Ingram (CMC ’16) caught an interception. With the win, CMS is 2-2 overall, 1-1 in SCIAC. The Stags next play at Redlands (2-2, 2-0 SCIAC) at 7 p.m. Oct. 18.

Men’s Soccer
The Stag soccer team was 1-2 last week, beating UC Santa Cruz (2-1) on Saturday but losing to Chapman (3-1) and La Verne (2-0) earlier in the week. Against Chapman, CMS scored its only goal off a penalty kick in the 64th minute by Hogan Marhoefer (CMC ’16). On Saturday’s game vs. UCSC, Jacques Bialostozky (CMC ’17) scored twice and late in the game for a comeback win. His goals were assisted by Jake Bishop (CMC ’15) and Michael Crowley (CMC ’17). Next up for the Stags (6-4-1, 5-4-1 SCIAC) is Cal Lutheran (3-7-3, 2-6-2 SCIAC) at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13 in Thousand Oaks. CMS faces Sixth Street Rival Pomona-Pitzer at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18

Men’s Cross Country
The Stag cross country team did not compete but will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 17 at the SCIAC Multi-Dual meet.  The meet will take place at La Mirada Regional Park in La Mirada with the first race beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Men’s Water Polo
The Stag water polo team played just one game last week but came up short, losing 14-13 in overtime to Cal Baptist. Eight Stags scored, led by Tanner Cullen (CMC ’16) with three goals. Mark Neitzel (CMC ’15), Adam Hilborn (CMC ’16) and Daniel Cogan (CMC ’16) each had two goals. CMS (4-12) begins SCIAC play at La Verne at 11 a.m. Oct. 18.

Men’s Tennis
The Stag tennis team was represented by Glenn Hull (CMC ’17) at the USTA/ITA Small College National Championships in Sumter, S.C. He qualified by winning the West Regional hosted by CMS two weeks ago. He faced and lost to the top seed in the first round but then won the seventh/eighth-place playoff 6-2, 6-3. For Hull and the Stags, tennis competition will resume in the spring.
