Athletics Week In Review (Extended Version - Word)

=========== Fall – Women=============

Women’s Soccer
The top-seeded Athena soccer team lost to fourth-seeded Redlands in the semifinal of the SCIAC tournament 1-0. CMS finishes its season 13-7-1 and earned the program’s sixth regular-season SCIAC title.

Volleyball
The Athena volleyball team competed in the SCIAC postseason tournament, hosted by Cal Lutheran. CMS beat La Verne in the semifinal match 3-0 (25-16, 26-24, 25-18) but then lost in the final to top-seeded Cal Lu 3-0 (25-19, 26-24, 25-18). The team earned an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament to compete for a national title. CMS faces Mary Hardin-Baylor at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14 at the regional site hosted by Cal Lu. The Athenas faced MHB earlier this season and won 3-1. Megan Coleman (CMC ’15) is currently ranked 15th in the nation for digs per set at 5.91, 567 total digs on the season.

Women’s Cross Country
The Athena cross country team is in preparation for the NCAA postseason. It will race again on Nov. 15 at the NCAA West Regional in Salem, Ore.  The meet, which serves as a qualifying race for the NCAA Championships, will be held in Bush’s Pasture Park, with the men racing at 10 a.m. and women racing at 11 a.m.

Women’s Basketball
The Athena basketball team did not compete last week. CMS begins its regular season against Pacific Lutheran at 4 p.m. Nov. 16 at the Linde Activities Center at Harvey Mudd.

====================== Fall – Men ========================

Football
In the final home game of the season, the Stag football team beat Whittier 40-3. The defense set a CMS record, allowing only 49 yards of offense, breaking a record previously set in 1958. The defense recorded six sacks and forced the Poets to punt seven times. Alex Chang (CMC ’15) had two sacks. Quarterback Trey Reynolds (CMC ’17) passed for 234 yards and four touchdowns to different receivers in the first half. CMS improves to 4-4 overall, 3-3 in SCIAC. The Stags next face Pomona-Pitzer (1-7, 1-5 SCIAC) at 1 p.m. Nov. 15 for the Battle of Sixth Street trophy and the last game of the season.

Men’s Cross Country
The Stag cross country is in preparation for the NCAA postseason. Men’s Water Polo
The Stag water polo team was 1-1 last week, with a big 15-10 win over Chapman, but a 12-11 overtime loss to Whittier earlier in the week. In the victory, James Kelly (CMC ’15) had 12 saves. Daniel Cogan (CMC ’16) really turned the momentum with a last-second goal in the first half, his first of two in the game. CMS improved to 10-13 overall, 6-1 in SCIAC play and moved into second place in the conference. The final SCIAC game for the Stags is against rival Pomona-Pitzer in Axelrood Pool at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12.

Women’s and Men’s Swimming and Diving
The Stags and Athenas hosted the annual Alumni Meet, which was a smashing success and lots of fun. The next competition is the Redlands Diving Invite on Nov. 15.
