Athletics Week In Review (Extended Version - Word)

=========== Fall – Women=============

Women’s Soccer

The Athena soccer team won its sixth SCIAC championship in program history while going 1-1 last week. CMS beat Chapman 2-0 and then lost to Pomoma-Pitzer 2-0.  Makella Brems (CMC ’17) and Darrah Shields (CMC ’16) scored for the Athenas against Chapman and Molly Freed (SCR ’15) had four saves. As the top seed in the conference tournament, CMS hosts fourth-seeded Redlands at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5. A victory will advance the Athenas to the SCIAC tournament final, hosted by CMS at 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8.

Volleyball
The Athena volleyball team was 2-0 last week with wins over Redlands (25-20, 25-20, 25-11) and Chapman (25-17, 25-20, 25-13) to secure the No. 2 seed for the upcoming SCIAC tournament.  In the two matches, the Athenas did not allow their opponent to score more than 20 points in any set. Megan Coleman (CMC ’15) had 41 digs in the three games and against Redlands, Audrey Breitwieser (CMC ’16) had a .562 hitting percentage and 20 kills. CMS plays third-seeded La Verne at 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6 at Cal Lutheran’s Gilbert Arena.

Women’s Cross Country
The Athena cross country team won its 24th SCIAC title after a first-place finish in the championship meet at Prado Park. The Athenas are ranked second regionally and 14th nationally. Sara Mostatabi (CMC ’15) finished fourth, Carmen Mejia (SCR ’17) finished fifth, Caroline Willian (CMC ’17) finished sixth and Jen Lehr (SC ’17) finished ninth. All four runners earned First Team All-SCIAC honors. Six more Athenas earned Second Team All-SCIAC honors, including Bryn McKillop (SCR ’18 , 11th), Taia Wu (SCR ’15, 13th), Kaitlyn Spees (SC ’ 15, 15th), Roselyn Cantu (CMC ’18, 17th), Anna Shepard (CMC ’17, 18th) and Rachel Mow (HMC ’17, 19th). Mostatabi earned First Team honors for the fourth time, becoming just the 12th woman in SCIAC history to achieve the feat. The teams will race again in two weeks at the NCAA West Regional in Salem, Ore., on Nov. 15.  The meet, which serves as a qualifying race for the NCAA Championships, will be held in Bush’s Pasture Park, with the men racing at 10 a.m. and women racing at 11 a.m.

===================== Winter – Women====================

Women’s Basketball
The Athena basketball team opened its season on Halloween night with an exhibition game against Dixie State from Utah. CMS won 65-52, scoring 38 points in the second half. The team was 33 for 46 from the foul line, with Jai Dungca (CMC ’17) draining all five of her opportunities. Kyra Ray (SCR ’14, KGI) hit four three-pointers and totaled 14 points on the night. CMS begins its regular season against Pacific Lutheran at 4 p.m. Nov. 16 at the Linde Activities Center at Harvey Mudd.

====================== Fall – Men ========================

Football
The Stag football team had a big 37-30 win over Cal Lutheran. CMS maintained a lead throughout the game for its third victory on the season. Among the defensive highlights were two blocked punts by Nick Nasse (CMC ’15) and Eduardo Ramirez (CMC ’17), and two interceptions returned for touchdowns by Victor Bunce (CMC ’18) and Geno Quaid (CMC ’18). Quarterback Trey Reynolds (CMC ’17) threw for 234 yards in the game and Max Winsberg (CMC ’15) recorded two sacks. CMS improves to 3-4 overall, 2-3 in SCIAC, bringing the Stags into the top four in conference. They next face Whittier (2-5, 1-4 SCIAC) at 1 p.m. Nov. 8 before the 2014 CMS Hall of Fame Induction Night at the CMC Athenaeum.

Men’s Soccer
The Stag soccer team was 2-0 last week with wins over Whittier (5-4, OT) and Caltech (4-1). In the victory over Whittier, Elijah Lichtenberg (CMC ’17) scored a hat trick (three goals) for his first goals of the season and his career. Taylor Lemmon (CMC ’16) assisted two of Lichtenberg’s goals that night.  Against Caltech, Michael Crowley (CMC ’17) scored three goals. The Stags finish their season 9-7-1 overall, 8-7-1 in conference for fifth place in SCIAC standings, just barely out of the running to compete in the SCIAC tournament.

Men’s Cross Country
The Stag cross country team won its 14th SCIAC title after a first-place finish in the championship meet at Prado Park. The Stags are ranked second in the region and 22nd nationally. CMS was down five points through three runners, but had seven runners in front of Pomona-Pitzer’s fourth to pull out the seven-point win. Zorg Loustalet (HMC ’16), Alex Mauro (CMC ’15) and Alex Lombardo (CMC ’17) earned First Team All-SCIAC honors by finishing second, sixth and 10th respectively. Loustalet also earned SCIAC Athlete of the Year honors by having the lowest combined finish at the SCIAC Multi-Dual and SCIAC Championships. Five Stags earned Second Team All-SCIAC honors, including Jack Wilson (CMC ’16, 11th), Sam Pitcavage (CMC ’15, 13th), Hunter Olsen (CMC ’18, 14th), Garrett Ryan (CMC ’17, 15th) and Jacob Higle-Ralbovsky (HMC ’16, 20th). The teams will race again in two weeks at the NCAA West Regional in Salem, Ore., on Nov. 15.  The meet, which serves as a qualifying race for the NCAA Championships, will be held in Bush’s Pasture Park, with the men racing at 10 a.m. and women racing at 11 a.m.

Men’s Water Polo
The Stag water polo was 2-0 last week to remain undefeated in SCIAC play. CMS beat Redlands 8-6, with Tanner Cullen (CMC ’16) leading the Stags with four goals. In the matchup against Caltech, 10 players contributed to the 14-6 win over the Beavers. Rye Newman (CMC ’17) and his defense held Caltech scoreless for the first nine minutes of Saturday’s game. CMS (9-12, 5-0 SCIAC) will round out its conference season against the stiff competition of Whittier (15-12, 4-0 SCIAC), Chapman (14-7, 5-0 SCIAC) and Pomona-Pitzer (6-14, 2-2 SCIAC) The Stags host Chapman on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 10 a.m.

Women’s and Men’s Swimming and Diving
CMS joined a six-team field at the Pomona-Pitzer Relays on Saturday, Nov. 1. The Athenas and Stags combined for six wins in the 19-event meet. The Stags earned their first win in the non-traditional 500-yard crescendo relay. Marc Blumberg (CMC ’15), Bryce Murley (HMC ’18), Cameron Whiting (CMC ’15) and Alex Mendoza (CMC ’15) swam freestyle distances of 50, 100, 150 and 200 yards for the victory in a time of 4:14.47. CMS next won the mixed 200-yard freestyle relay. Kelly Ngo (CMC ’17), Blumberg, Courtney Chan (CMC ’17), Mendoza, LillyBelle Deer (CMC ’15), Whiting, Lorea Gwo (CMC ’18) and Patrick Shultz (CMC ’15) each sprinted a 25. Matthew Valentine (HMC ’16), Matthew Williams (CMC ’17) and Blumberg joined forces to take the 3 x 100 butterfly relay. Senior Stags Whiting, Blumberg and Mendoza won the 3 x 500 freestyle relay. Their time of 14:37.25 was nearly 15 seconds ahead of second-place California Baptist University. CMS ended the day with a pair of first-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The Athena relay of Stephanie Doi (CMC ’17), Ngo, Chan and Gwo edged Cal Baptist by a narrow .04 seconds. In the men’s event, Whiting, Williams, Graham Spurzem (CMC ’17), and Shultz took the 4 x 50 freestyle sprint. California Baptist won the team scoring with 248 points. Host Pomona-Pitzer was second (229), CMS third (216), La Verne fourth (68), Concordia fifth (31) and Chapman sixth (25). CMS will host its annual Alumni Meet on Saturday, Nov. 8. Competition is slated to begin at 12:30 p.m.
