Athletics Week In Review (Extended Version - Word)

===================== Winter – Women====================

Women’s Basketball
The Athena basketball team competed in the NCAA tournament for the second year in a row.  In the first-round matchup verses the University of Puget Sound, the Athenas saw their 20-game win streak and season come to an end as they lost 61-56.  Kimberly Scamman (CMC ’15), who is SCIAC Player of the Year, led the Athenas with 25 points and eight rebounds.  Kailee Severt (CMC ’18) was the second-leading scorer for CMS as she scored 13 points.  The Athenas finish their season 24-4, tying the school record for best season, which was set last year.

Women’s Swimming and Diving
The women’s swimming and diving team did not compete this week but select participants will compete March 18-21 at the Division III National Championships in Shenandoah, Texas.

===================== Winter – Men ====================

Men’s Basketball
The Stag basketball team did what no CMS men’s basketball team has done since 1996: win an NCAA tournament game.  The stags defeated Texas Lutheran University 79-55. Current SCIAC Player of the Year Tyler Gaffaney (CGU) led CMS with 23 points and seven rebounds.  In their second-round game verses East Texas Baptist University, CMS fell 80-75.  In that game, Jason Harrington (CMC ’16) led the team with 18 points.  CMS men’s basketball finished the season with a 22-7 overall record.

Men’s Swimming and Diving
The men’s swimming and diving team did not compete this week but select individuals will compete March 18-21 at the Division III National Championships in Shenandoah, Texas.

===================== Spring Sports – Women ====================

Women’s Water Polo
The Athena water polo team went 2-2 last weekend as it hosted the Claremont Convergence Tournament.  The Athenas lost to UC San Diego (14-3), beat George Washington (9-8), lost to Cal State Monterey Bay (8-7) and beat Caltech (16-5). In the win over George Washington, Jessica Gaffney (CMC ’18) led CMS with four goals, and in the victory over Caltech, Helen Thomason (SCR ’18) led CMS with four goals. CMS improves to 3-10 on the season and next plays at home on March 11 against Bucknell (Pa.) at 3 p.m.

Women’s Golf                               
The women’s golf team did not compete this week but will be back in action on March 13- 15 at the Collegiate Invitational in Jekyll Island, Ga.

Softball
The Athenas went 2-0 this weekend against Redlands (8-3, 9-0).  Carly Roleder (CMC ’18) batted .800 on the weekend, scoring five runs, with a double, home run and two RBI.  Brooklyn Robinson (SCR ’16) scored two runs and had five RBI on the weekend for CMS.  On the defensive side, Briana Halle (CMC 18) and Andrea Jewett (CMC ’17) pitched a combined shutout in the second game.  CMS improves to 8-2 overall and 5-1 in SCIAC.  The Athenas take the field next at home on Friday as they host Ithaca (N.Y.) at 2 and 4 p.m.

Women’s Tennis
The CMS women’s tennis team remained undefeated this week, with victories over Cal Lu (9-0) and Washington (Mo.) 8-1.  The women’s tennis team remained completely dominant as it dispatched its first SCIAC opponent in impressive fashion with a complete sweep. CMS lost only one match the entire weekend, in No. 1 singles against Washington.  CMS improves to 7-0 overall and 1-0 in SCIAC.  The Athenas’ next match is against Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) at 4 p.m. March 10 at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.

Women’s Track & Field
The CMS women’s track and field team went 2-0 last weekend as it won its first SCIAC dual meet of the season over Occidental (135-21) and Redlands (122-41).  Winners for the Athenas included Amy Hollshwander (CMC ’17) in the 100 hurdles (15.23); Caroline Willian (CMC ’17) in the steeplechase (11:20.74); the 4 x 100 relay team of Madison Knaub (CMC ’15), Hanna Tarleton (CMC ’17), Aiyanna Cameron-Lewis (CMC ’18) and Tyra Abraham (SCR ’18) (48.26); Bryn McKillop (SCR ’18) in the 1,500 (4:40.96); Cameron-Lewis in the 400 (56.50) and 200 (25.31), Abraham in the 100 (12.40); Carmen Mejia (SCR ’17) in the 800 (2:15.96); Tarleton in the 400 hurdles (63.05); Sara Mostatabi (CMC ’15) in the 5,000 (17:51.22); the 4 x 400 relay team of Tarleton, Mejia, McKillop and Cameron-Lewis; Emily Bassett (CMC ’18) in the hammer throw (45.87m [150-6]); Lauren Mott (CMC ’17) in the javelin (35.91m [117-9]); Vaiva Palunas (SCR ’17) in the shot put (11.65m [38-2.5]) and discus (43.64m [143-2]) and Liz Lee (HMC ’17) in the triple jump (10.86m [35-7.5]). 

Women’s Lacrosse
The Athenas extended their win streak to five with a 13-9 win over Chapman.  The Athenas’ offense stayed hot as eight players scored, with Joanna Heywood (CMC ’17) leading the charge with three goals.  CMS is now 5-0 overall and 4-0 in conference.  The Athenas play Sunday against SUNY New Paltz on Zinda Field at 11 a.m.

===================== Spring Sports – Men ====================

Men’s Golf
The CMS men’s golf team did not compete this week but will travel to Jekyll Island, Ga., to compete March 13-15 in the Collegiate Invitational.  

Baseball
The Stags went 0-3 this weekend with tough losses to Cal Lu (11-1, 8-1, and 12-2). Jack Witte (CMC ’16) and Andrew Burgard (CMC ’16) each had two RBI this weekend to lead CMS while MacKenzie Menthen (CMC ’16) led CMS with two runs. The Stags are now 0-18 and 0-12 in conference and next play at home at 3 p.m. March 10 verses Ithaca (N.Y.).

Men’s Tennis
The CMS men’s tennis team defeated Cal Lu on Sunday 9-0 in its only complete match of the week.  In the sweep, Joe Dorn (CMC ’15) and Max Macey (CMC ’17) lost only one game in both sets to win (6-1, 6-1) in the singles portion of the match.  The Stags next take on Wesleyan at home at 10 a.m. March 13 in the Stag-Hen Invitational. 

Men’s Track & Field
The CMS men’s track and field team went 2-0 this weekend after beating Occidental 117-46 and Redlands 109-54 in its first dual meet of the season. Event winners for the Stags included Bob Owlett (CMC ’16) in the steeplechase (9:41.64); Evan Molineux (CMC ’16) in the 1,500 (3:55.55); Justin Jones (HMC ’15) in the 800 (1:56.32); Zorg Loustalet (HMC ’16) in the 5,000 (15:33.19); Alex Rich (HMC ’16) in the hammer throw (50.83m [166-9]); Elan Bernstein (CMC ’15) in the javelin (50.59m [165-11]); Matthew Wong (CMC ’17) in the long (6.94m [22-9.25]) and triple (13.93m [45-8.5]) jumps; Michael Wagenveld (CMC ’18) in the pole vault (4.30m [14-1.25]) and Cam Van (CMC ’17) in the high jump (1.93m [6-4]). The Stags next compete at 5 p.m. March 13 at the Occidental Distance Carnival.

===================== 5C Club Teams====================

Men’s Rugby
The men's rugby team defeated UC Riverside 48-20 at Parents Field on Saturday.  With the win, the team secured the conference championship.  The team will play their last conference match on Wednesday, March 11 at Pepperdine.  The match will start at 4:00 p.m.

Women’s Rugby
The Claremont Women’s Rugby team earned a bonus point win defeating USC 38-29 in an exciting match on Parents Field.  The scrum was again dominate with crushing runs by Morgan McCoy (CMC '18) while the backs were paced by the excellent play of Katelyn Faust (CMC '17) and Hannah Sands (SCR '17).  Try scorers were McCoy, Faust, Rebecca Rosenthal (CMC '15) and Carin Ragland (CMC '15).  The win puts the Foxes at 3-5-1 for the season.  After spring break, the Foxes return to action against Occidental on March 28.

Men’s Lacrosse
The Claremont men’s lacrosse team lost a tough game to UCLA on Saturday 13-5.  Zane MacFarlane (Pomona ’17) was the leading scorer for the Cougars with three goals.  The Cougars take the field next on April 9 against UC Santa Barbra at home.
