Athletics Week In Review (Extended Version - Word)
=========== Fall – Women=============
Women’s
Basketball
The Athena basketball team went 2-0 last week, beating Cal Lu 50-38
and cross-town rival Pomona 71 -41. Against Cal Lu,
Claire Donnelly (CMC ’17) recorded her first
career double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 11
rebounds. Against Pomona, Kim Scamman (CMC
’15) recorded her second double-double of the week with 17
points and 11 rebounds. CMS is now 15-3 overall, 9-0 in the SCIAC.
The Athenas face Occidental at home at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 28 and then
travel to Whittier to take on the Poets at 5 p.m. Jan 31.
Women’s Swimming
and Diving
The Athena swimming and diving team defeated Caltech 247-25 and
Whittier 224-75 in a dual meet on Saturday hosted at Pasadena City
College. In the dual meet, the Athenas had one triple event winner
as Kelly Ngo (CMC ’17) won 100-yard
breaststroke and was on the first-place 200-yard free relay and
200-yard medley relay teams. CMS improves to 6-0 in the conference.
The Athenas will be back in action on Jan. 31 as they travel to
Redlands to take on the Bulldogs at 11 a.m.

Men’s
Basketball
The Stag basketball team went 1-1 last week, beating Cal Lu 73-65
but lost to cross-town rival Pomona 58-57. Against Cal Lu,
Tyler Gaffaney (CGU) scored 26 points and against
Pomona, Nick Lund (CMC ’16) tied his season
high with 10 points. CMS is now 12-4 overall, 5-2 in the SCIAC. The
Stags take on Occidental College at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 27 at the Rains
Center, and then they travel to Whittier to play the Poets at 7
p.m. Jan. 31.
Men’s Swimming and
Diving
The Stag swimming and diving team defeated Caltech 224-56 and
Whittier 206-69 in a dual meet on Saturday hosted at by Caltech.
Two Stags won were triple event winners as Patrick
Shultz (CMC ’15) placed first in the 100-yard
butterfly, 50-yard free and was on the winning 200-yard relay team,
and Graham Spurzem (CMC ’17) placed first in
the 100-yard free and was on the first-place 200-yard free relay
and 200-yard medley relay teams. Also, James
Stevick (CMC ’15) won the 1- and 3-meter diving
competitions. CMC improves to 6-0 in the conference. The
Stags will be back in action on Jan. 31 as they travel to Redlands
to take on the Bulldogs at 11 a.m.

Women’s Water
Polo
The Athena water polo team opened its season this past weekend,
losing to two Division I opponents, Loyola Marymount (11-2) and UC
Santa Barbara (20-2). Against Loyola Marymount,
Brittany Arneson (CMC ’17) scored both goals
for CMS. The Athenas are in action next against Hartwick at
home at 6 p.m. Jan. 30.

Women’s
Rugby
The Claremont women’s rugby team opened its spring league
season by falling in a hard-fought match to last year’s
Division II National Champion runner-up, Cal State Northridge.
Standouts in the losing effort were Celia Dattels
(PZ ’16) and Lauren Dorsey (CMC ’18).
The loss puts the Foxes at 2-2-1 on the season. They visit Cal
State Fullerton on Jan. 31.
Men’s
Rugby
The Claremont Colleges men’s rugby team, with new mascot the
Lions, opened their season with at 63-14 victory over Cal Lu.
The Lions finished the match with a total of nine tries.
Freshman Bobby Chui (CMC ’18) had a perfect day kicking as he
converted all nine tries. The Lions next play at Occidental
College on Jan. 31 at 8 p.m.
