Athletics Week In Review (Extended Version - Word)
=============== Winter – Women=============
Women’s
Basketball
The Athena basketball team went 2-0 last week, with victories over
Pomona-Pitzer (66-57) and Cal Lu (56-45). The win Wednesday
against the Sagehens ensured the Athenas would be in sole
possession of the SCIAC title for the second year in a row, and
their victory over Cal Lu solidified the Athenas’ perfect
SCIAC record (16-0) for the season. Against Pomona, Kris
Brackman (CMC ’18) had 16 points and six rebounds,
while against Cal Lu, Kim Scamman (CMC ’15)
scored 25 points and had eight rebounds. CMS is now 22-3 overall,
16-0 in the SCIAC. The Athenas will host a first-round SCIAC
tournament game at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Linde Activities
Center.
Women’s Swimming
and Diving
The women’s
swimming and diving team won the SCIAC Championships for the
13th consecutive year. The Athenas won the title
with a score of 1,153, with the next-closest team scoring 1,085
(Pomona-Pitzer). On the first day in the 1-meter diving event,
Maia Presti (SCR ’17) set the SCIAC and meet
records en route to her first-place finish. On the third and
fourth day of the meet, Emily McKinnon (CMC
’17) won the 100 and 200-yard backstroke. In the next week or
so, student-athletes will be informed of official NCAA qualifying
times for the Division III National Championships in Shenandoah,
Texas, from March 18-21. Before that, NCAA Diving Prelims take
place on Feb. 27-28.

Men’s
Basketball
The Stag basketball team went 2-0 last week, with wins over
Pomona–Pitzer (67-49) and Cal Lu (64-54), putting the Stags
in a three-way tie for first place with Chapman and Cal Lu. Against
Cal Lu, Tyler Gaffaney (CGU) scored 23 points and
grabbed seven rebounds, while against Pomona-Pitzer, Shelby
Lane (CMC ’16) pulled in a team-high 10 rebounds.
CMS is now 18-6 overall, 11-4 in the SCIAC. The Stags travel to La
Verne to take on the Leopards at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Men’s Swimming and
Diving
The men’s swimming and diving team won the SCIAC
Championships for the eighth consecutive year. The Stags won
the title with a total score of 1,148.5, followed by Pomona-Pitzer
with a score of 824. Highlighting the men’s competition was
James Stevick (CMC ’15) in the 1-meter
diving competition. He posted an overall score of 617.75,
shattering his previous record of 562.70, set last season. Stevick
capped his day with five perfect 10s from the judges on his final
dive of the meet. CMS head coach Charlie Griffiths was names SCIAC
Men’s Coach of the Year for 2014-15. In the next week or so,
student-athletes will be informed of official NCAA qualifying times
for the Division III National Championships in Shenandoah, Texas,
from March 18-21, 2015. Before that, NCAA Diving Prelims take place
on Feb. 27-28.
===================== Spring Sports – Women ====================
Women’s Water
Polo
The Athena water polo
team lost a tough one to a very talented Hawaii team (21-2) in its
only competition of the week. Scoring the only two goals for
the Athenas were Ellen Perfect (CMC ’17) and
Roxy Kiessling (CMC ’18). The Athenas
are now 1-6 and look to get back on track when they play Santa
Clara at 10:30 a.m. March 1 at the Cal Lutheran
Invitational.
Women’s
Golf
The women’s golf
team competed in the first SCIAC tournament of the season last
weekend at Robinson Ranch. After being fourth at the end of the
first day, the Athenas picked it up the second day and finished
second with a score of 669. Margaret Loncki (CMC
’18) had the lowest combined score from both days for the
Athenas, as she shot a combined 166, while Marissa
Suehiro (CMC ’15) had the best single-day score for
the Athenas, as she shot an 80 on Day Two. The Athenas are
next in action at the Collegiate Invitational on March 13 in Jekyll
Island, Ga.
Softball
The Athenas continued
their winning streak that started the previous week as they swept
Willamette (6-1, 4-0). In both games on Saturday, Carly
Roleder (CMC ’18) batted .800, had one home run and
three RBIs. On the rubber, Andrea Jewett (CMC
’17) earned her second win of the season (2-0) as she and
Briana Halle (CMC ’18) combined for the
shutout in the second game. The Athenas are now 5-1 overall, and
2-0 in conference. They will travel to Thousand Oaks to take on Cal
Lu on Saturday, Feb. 28 at noon and 2 p.m.
Women’s Tennis
The CMS women’s
tennis team went 2-0 last Saturday, defeating Bates 8-1 and Point
Loma 7-2. Against Bates (Maine), all three doubles teams won
and five of the six singles won as well, with Bria
Smith (CMC ’18) shutting out her opponent in No. 5
singles. Against Point Loma, CMS continued its doubles
dominance, winning all three matches and four of the six singles
matches. Kyla Scott (HMC ’18) had the
most impressive margin of victory, as she won in straight sets
(6-1, 6-1). The CMS women’s tennis team is next in
action as it travels to Northern California for matches against
Academy of Art on Feb. 28 and UC Santa Cruz on March 1.
Women’s Track &
Field
The CMS women’s
track and field team competed at the Pomona-Pitzer All-Comers Meet
on Saturday, and several Athenas placed first in their respective
events. Coming in first for the Athenas were Tyra
Abraham (SCR ’18) in the 100-meter dash with a time
of 12.34, and the 4x400-meter relay team of Hanna
Tarleton (CMC ’17), Carmen Mejia
(SCR ’17), Brina Jablonski (CMC ’18)
and Aiyanna Cameron-Lewis (CMC ’18) with a
time of 3:57.74. The Athenas are next in action at the
19th Rossi Relays at home at 11 a.m.
Saturday.
Women’s
Lacrosse
The Athenas are off to a
good start after victories over Occidental (12-10) and Colorado
College (14-13). Against Occidental, CMS had a very balanced attack
as Tarah Gilbreth (CMC ’18),
Christina Coffin (CMC ’16), Molly
O’Donnell (CMC ’16) and Ellie
Dolan (SCR ’18) each scored twice. Against Colorado
College, Katie Hill (CMC ’18) scored a
game-high four goals for the Athenas. CMS women’s
lacrosse is now 2-0, 1-0 in SCIAC play, and next travels to
Whittier to take on the Poets at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
===================== Spring Sports – Men ====================
Men’s Golf
The CMS men’s golf
team competed in the first SCIAC tournament of the season,
finishing third. After a strong first day, shooting a 305, the
Stags found themselves in second place. Shooting a 318 on the
second day dropped them to third. Kethan
Reddy (CMC ’16) led the Stags with a two-day total
of 153, including a 73 in the first round. The Stags are back
in action on March 13 as they travel to Jekyll Island, Ga., to
compete in the Collegiate Invitational.
Baseball
The Stags remained
winless last week, with losses to Bates (15-4) and La Verne (20-4,
10-1, 7-4). Against Bates (Maine), Nicholas Lillie
(CMC ’17) went 2-for-3, had a double and an RBI. Against La
Verne, Nolan Anderson (CMC ’18) had four
RBIs and a homer on the day for the Stags. The Stags are now 0-12
overall, 0-6 in SCIAC play. They travel to Occidental to take
on the Tigers at 2:30 p.m. Feb. 27.
Men’s Tennis
The CMS men’s
tennis team started the season strong, winning a pair of dual
matches against Brandeis (Mass.) and Bates (Maine) by the score of
7-2. CMS led both matches after the doubles portion of the
competition and dominated the No. 2-No. 6 singles matches in both
competitions. All 11 roster players contributed in the
doubleheader on Saturday and five Stags earned two or more wins on
the day. CMS men’s tennis next faces UC San Diego at 11:30
a.m. Saturday.
Men’s Track &
Field
The CMS men’s track
and field team competed in the Pomona-Pitzer All-Comers Meet on
Saturday, and had several athletes finish among the top three in
their respective events. Joshua Sealand (HMC
’17) finished first in the 3,000-meter run and Alex
Rich (HMC ’16) finished first in the hammer throw.
Finishing second for the Stags were Evan Molineux
(CMC ’16) in the mile with a time of 4:15.91, Matt
Wong (CMC ’17) in the long jump, and the 4x400-meter
relay team of Ryan Jones (HMC
’16), Molineux, Ashraf
Mathkour (CMC ’15) Justin Jones
(HMC ’15) with a time of 3:26.77. Finishing third for the
Stags was Wong in the triple jump. Rich also finished third in the
discus. The Stags are next in action at the 19th Rossi
Relays at home at 11 a.m. Saturday.
===================== 5C Club Teams====================
Men’s Rugby
The men's rugby team
defeated UC San Diego 77-0 on Saturday at Parents Field. UCSD
was missing several key players but still fought hard. The
team will play next when they host UC Riverside at Parents Field on
March 7.
Women’s Rugby
After leading for most of
the first half, the Claremont women’s rugby team eventually
fell to UC Riverside 72-8. Point scorers in the losing effort
were Naomi Brooks (PZ ’17) and
Katelyn Faust (CMC ’17). The loss puts
the Foxes at 2-4-1 on the season. Next up for the Foxes is UC
Irvine at 11 a.m. Feb. 28 on Parents Field.
Men’s Lacrosse
The Claremont Cougars
men’s lacrosse club returned from its road trip to Las Vegas
2-3 on the season. Tough losses this weekend to Utah Valley
University (9-6) and the University of Nevada Las Vegas (14-10)
were mitigated somewhat by the five goals scored by Zane
MacFarlane (Pomona ’17) during the weekend.
This week includes a visit from USC at 7 p.m. Wednesday on the
Pomona Turf Field and by Biola University at 2 p.m. Saturday on
Parent’s Field.
