Athletics Week In Review (Extended Version - Word)

=============== Winter – Women=============

Women’s Basketball
The Athena basketball team went 2-0 last week, with victories over Redlands (61-48) and Occidental (60-37).  These two wins not only guaranteed the Athenas at worst a share of a second consecutive SCIAC title but also extended their win streak to 16. Against Redlands, Kim Scamman (CMC ’15) scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while against Occidental, Kris Brackman (CMC ’18) scored 14 points and had six rebounds. CMS is now 20-3 overall, 14-0 in the SCIAC. The Athenas take on Pomona-Pitzer at home at 7:30 p.m.  Wednesday, Feb. 18.

Women’s Swimming and Diving
Women’s swimming & diving did not compete this week but will be back in action this Thursday at the SCIAC Championships, hosted by Cal Lutheran, at Whittier College starting at 9 a.m./5 p.m. The Championships run from Feb. 19-22.

===================== Winter – Men ====================

Men’s Basketball
The Stag basketball team went 2-1 last week, with wins against Redlands (71-56), Caltech (60-44), and a loss to Occidental (78-72). Against Redlands, Tyler Gaffaney (CGU) scored 25 points, and against Caltech, Shelby Lane (CMC ’16) scored 12 points. In the loss to Occidental, Jack Earley (CMC ’16) led all scorers with 19. CMS is now 16-6 overall, 9-4 in the SCIAC. The Stags take on Pomona-Pitzer at the Rains Center at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17.  

Men’s Swimming and Diving
Men’s swimming & diving did not compete this week but will be back in action this Thursday at the SCIAC Championships, hosted by Cal Lutheran at Whittier College, starting on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 9 a.m./5 p.m. The Championships run from Feb. 19-22.

===================== Spring Sports – Women ====================

Women’s Water Polo
The Athena water polo team earned its first win of the season last weekend, beating Redlands (17-9), but lost to CSUN (15-7) and Cal Baptist (12-4). Against CSUN, Rose Koper (CMC ’15) scored four goals on just six attempts, and against Cal Baptist, Jessica Gaffney (CMC ’18) led the Athenas with two goals.  In the victory over Redlands, Koper scored a season-high six goals. CMS women’s water polo is now 1-5 and next plays at Axelrood Pool at 7 p.m. Feb. 19 against Hawaii.

Women’s Golf                               
The women’s golf team did not compete this past week but is back in action on Feb. 21 at the first SCIAC tournament at Robinson Ranch.

Softball
The Athenas opened SCIAC play with a sweep of Occidental (7-3, 8-0) in their home-opener. In both games on Saturday, Brooklyn Robinson (SCR ’16) batted .500, had four RBIs, a triple and scored two runs, while Mikayla O'Neal  (CMC ’16) batted .600, had two RBIs, a triple and scored one run.  The Athenas are now 3-1 overall, and 2-0 in conference. They will take on Willamette (Ore.) this Saturday, Feb. 21 at home on Athena field at noon and 2 p.m.

Women’s Tennis
The CMS women’s tennis team did not have a match this week but take on Bates College (Maine) at 10 a.m. and Point Loma at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21 at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.

Women’s Track and Field
The CMS women’s track and field team competed at the Sialaris Memorial Throws Meet on Saturday and several Athenas placed first in their respective events. Coming in first for the Athenas was Vaiva Palunas (SCR ’17) in the discus, Nicole Laliberte(CMC ’17) in the hammer, and Laruen Mott (CMC ’17) in the javelin. The Athenas first full meet is Feb. 21 at the Pomona-Pitzer All-Comers meet.

Women’s Lacrosse
The Athenas lost an exhibition game in San Diego against the University of Western Ontario 13-8.  The Athenas season officially gets started on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. as they take on Occidental in their home opener.

Men’s Golf
The men’s golf team did not compete this past week but is back in action on Feb. 21 at Robinson Ranch in the first SCIAC tournament of the season.

Baseball
The Stags won an exhibition game against Okanagan College 11-1, but were swept in their series against cross-street rival, Pomona-Pitzer (13-3, 10-6, 15-13).  For the weekend, Trey Smith (CMC ’18) batted .700, had two home runs and three RBIs while Evan Opperman (CMC ’17) had two doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored.  The Stags are back in action on Arce Field at 2:30 p.m. Feb. 17 against Bates College (Maine).

Men’s Tennis
The CMS men’s tennis team did not have a match this week but open with a doubleheader at home on Saturday, Feb. 21 against Brandeis (Mass.) at 10 a.m. and Bates College (Maine) at 3 p.m. at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.

Men’s Track and Field
The CMS men’s track and field team competed in the Sialaris Memorial Throws Meet this past weekend and several stags finished in the top two in their respective events. Coming in first for the Stags was Elan Bernstein (CMC ’15) in the javelin and Sam Perrella (CMC ’15) placed second in the shot put.  The Stags first full meet is Feb. 21 at the Pomona-Pitzer All-Comers meet.

===================== 5C Club Teams====================

Men’s Rugby
The Claremont Colleges men's rugby team hosted Azusa Pacific on Feb. 7 at Parents in their last match and did not play last week. Their next match is against Pepperdine away on Feb.21.

Women’s Rugby
The Claremont women’s rugby team did not play this week but take on UC-Riverside at 11 a.m. Feb. 21 on Parents Field.

Men’s Lacrosse
The Claremont Cougars men’s lacrosse club went 1-1, beating UC Irvine (19-3), but losing to Santa Clara (11-4).  In the win over UC Irvine, Kaegan Ingrasci (Pitzer ’17) scored six goals, and in the loss to Santa Clara, Zane MacFarlane (Pomona ’17) scored three goals and Goalie Jeffrey Allen (Pomona ’17) had 20 saves. The Cougars take on Utah Valley in Las Vegas at 2 p.m. Feb. 21.
