Athletics Week In Review (Extended Version - Word)
=============== Winter – Women=============
Women’s
Basketball
The Athena basketball team went 1-0 last week, extending its win
streak to 14 as it beat Chapman 60-54 in its only contest of the
week. Against Chapman, Kim Scamman (CMC ’15)
scored 16 points and Kailee Severt (CMC ’18)
tied her career and season high with 14 points. CMS is now 18-3
overall, 12-0 in the SCIAC. The Athenas travel to the University of
Redlands to take on the Bulldogs at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 11.
Women’s Swimming
and Diving
The women’s swimming and diving team defeated Pomona-Pitzer
188-112 and set five Axelrood Pool records along the way. The
Athenas’ 200-yard medley relay team of Kelly
Ngo (CMC ’17), Stephanie Doi (CMC
’17), Lorea Gwo (CMC ’18) and
Courtney Chan (CMC ’17) broke the pool
record with a time of 1:46.76. Maia Presti (SCR
’17) set the 1-meter diving record with a score of 269.05
while Carli Lessard (HMC ’17) broke the
3-meter diving record with a score of 270.55. Ngo also broke the
100-yard backstroke record with a time of 58.50, and Gwo broke the
100-yard butterfly record with a time of 56.72. With the meet
victory, the CMS women’s swim team senior class improves to
31-0 in SCIAC dual meets for their career. CMS improves to 8-0 in
the conference. The Athenas will be back in action at the SCIAC
Championships on Feb. 19-22 in Commerce, Calif.

Men’s
Basketball
The Stag basketball team lost an overtime thriller to Chapman
65-62. Tyler Gaffaney (CGU) scored 21 points and
Shelby Lane (CMC ’16) recorded a career-high
16 rebounds. CMS is now 14-5 overall, 7-3 in the SCIAC. The Stags
travel to the University of Redlands to take on the Bulldogs at
7:30 p.m. Feb. 10.
Men’s Swimming and
Diving
The men’s swimming and diving team defeated Pomona-Pitzer
191-107. With this win, the CMS men’s swim team seniors
finished the SCIAC dual meets with a perfect 31-0 record overall.
The Stags went out with a bang as they set six Axelrood Pool
records on Saturday. The 200-yard medley relay team of
Matthew Williams (CMC ’17), Zach
Alleva (CMC ’16), Patrick Shultz
(CMC ’15) and Alex Poltash (CMC ’16)
broke the pool record with a time of 1:33.16 while the 400-yard
relay team of Cameron Whiting (CMC ’15),
Poltash, Shultz and Graham Spurzem (CMC ’17)
broke the previous pool record with a time of 3:08.31.
Williams set pool records in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke with
times of 49.64 and 1:51.03, respectively. Alex
Mendoza (CMC ’15) set the pool record for the
500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:41.06. While on the diving
board, James Stevick (CMC ’15) set a pool
record in the 1-meter competition with a score of 355.20. CMS
improves to 8-0 in the conference. The Stags will be back in action
at the SCIAC Championships on Feb. 19-22 in Commerce,
Calif.
===================== Spring Sports –Women ====================
Women’s Water
Polo
The Athenas did not have a match during the week and are now 0-3
and travel to Northridge on Feb. 13 at 3 p.m. seeking their first
win of the season.
Women’s
Golf
The women’s golf team opened its spring season at the
Claremont Quad, finishing second behind Pomona-Pitzer with a score
of 328, well ahead of Occidental. Lindsay Slocum
(CMC ’17) finished second for the Athenas, shooting 79. The
Athenas are back in action Feb. 21 at Robinson Ranch for their
first SCIAC tournament of the season.
Softball
The Athenas split their first doubleheader of the season with
Vanguard (1-2, 4-1). The Athenas’ defense was able to
hold Vanguard to only three runs on the day. On offense, the
Athenas picked it up in the second game, scoring four runs. On the
day, Katie Savard (CMC ’16) had four hits,
including a double, an RBI and two runs scored while Alexa
Heydenberk (CMC ’17) had three hits and two
RBIs. The Athenas’ home-opener is on Feb. 14 against
Occidental at noon and 2 p.m.
Women’s
Tennis
The women’s tennis team defeated Cal State L.A. in its
home-opener quite handedly, with a match score of 8-1. CMS
swept the doubles matches of the event; the No. 1 doubles partners
Caroline Ward (CMC ’16) and Katie
Kuosman (CMC ’17) and No. 2 doubles partners
Lindsay Brown (CMC ’18) and Bria
Smith (CMC ’18) won their matches by scores of
8-1. From there, CMS went on to win five of six singles
matches, all in just two sets. The Athenas next face Bates
College (Maine) at 10 a.m. Feb. 21 at the Biszantz Family Tennis
Center.
===================== Spring Sports –Men ====================
Men’s
Golf
In the three-round CS San Marcos Cougar Invitational the Stags
finished fifth, the highest of any NCAA or SCIAC teams at the
tournament. Kethan Reddy (CMC ’16) was the
highest finisher for the Stags, as he shot one round at par and
another two strokes under for a combined score of 222. The Stags
are next in action at the first SCIAC tournament on Feb.
21.
Baseball
The Stags opened their season with a tough loss to The
Master’s College 10-4, and were then swept on their first
homestand by Willamette (Ore.) (9-3, 9-2, 6-3, 12-6). Against
Master’s, Christian Hoxsie (CMC ’15)
hit a home run and John Rizzo (CMC ’15)
homered and had two RBIs in a game against Willamette. The
Stags are now 0-5 and take on Okanagan at 2 p.m. Feb. 10, in an
exhibition game.

Men’s
Rugby
The Claremont Colleges men's rugby team hosted Azusa Pacific on
Feb. 8 at Parents Field. The team came away with a 29-24 victory in
a tightly contested match. In their next match the team faces
Pepperdine away on Feb.21.
Women’s
Rugby
The Claremont women’s rugby team continued their spring
league season falling in a hard-fought match to league leaders Long
Beach State 41-12. Try scorers in the losing effort were
Joey Yamada (CMC’18) and Rebecca
Rosenthal (CMC’15). The loss puts the Foxes at
2-3-1 on the season. After a week break, the team plays three
successive home games starting with UC-Riverside on Feb. 21 at 11
am on Parents Field.
Men’s
Lacrosse
The Claremont Cougars men’s lacrosse club opened the 2015
season with a decisive victory over Cal State Long Beach,
19-5. Zane MacFarlane (Pomona ’17) had
5 goals and 4 assists; Kevin Lynch (CMC ’17)
also had 5 goals—three of them in a row. The team
continues the season at UC Irvine on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. and has
a Parents Weekend home game on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. on the Pomona
turf field.
