A Message from the AD's Desk

Men’s Cross Country

Senior Thomas D'Anieri finished in third place as the Stags had their second-highest finish in program history by ending up sixth at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships on Nov. 23. The Stags have now competed at Nationals 12-straight seasons. The sixth-place finish at Nationals capped off a season that saw the Stags win the SCIAC championship for the 17th time in program history and place second at West Regionals. At Regionals, Stevie Steinberg, Kyril Van Schendel and Miles Christensen finished in third through fifth place.

D’Anieri was selected as the SCIAC Male Athlete of the Year while Henry Pick was named the Newcomer of the Year.

Men’s Water Polo

The Stags played for the first-ever USA Water Polo Division III National Championship and finished as the national runner-up after falling 5-3 at Whittier in a closely contested match. To reach the championship match, the Stags defeated Johns Hopkins 14-11 in the semifinals. Overall this season, the Stags placed second in SCIAC, finishing with an 18-12 record and 11-3 mark in SCIAC matches.

Seniors Zack Rossman and Ethan Lewis earned first-team All-SCIAC honors for the Stags, while sophomores Will Clark and Noah Smith were chosen to the second team. Lewis was named a first-team ACWPC Division III All-America, while Rossman was chosen to the second team and Clark and Smith earned honorable mention honors.

Women’s Soccer

After coming up just short of qualifying for the SCIAC Postseason Tournament (top four teams), bolstered by its strength of schedule, the Athenas received an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament and went on a run to the Round of 16. In the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the Athenas defeated Emory 2-1, followed by a win on penalty kicks over Cal Lutheran in the second round to advance to the Round of 16 for only the second time in program history. In the Round of 16, the Athenas pushed third-ranked Washington University, St. Louis to the brink before falling 2-1 in overtime. CMS finished the season with an 11-5-4 record overall, 6-4-2 in SCIAC.

Senior midfielder Rhiann Holman earned a spot on the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III All-America third team this season to highlight the individual accolades for the Athenas. Holman was also first team All-Region while center backs Grace Pratt and Gracyn Buenconsejo were named to the third team. Three Athenas were All-SCIAC: Holman (first team), Buenconsejo (first team) and senior Sarah Tocher (second team).

Men’s Soccer

The Stags won the SCIAC regular season and Postseason Tournament championships in 2019 – a first since the conference tournament was introduced in 2006 - and then went on a run to the Round of 16 in the NCAA Division III Tournament. CMS last advanced to the Round of 16 in 1985. The Stags finished 16-4-2 overall, and won four straight postseason 2-0 games, including the SCIAC semifinals and finals over Occidental and Redlands, and the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament over Texas Lutheran and Trinity. CMS fell 4-2 to Centre in the Round of 16.

Junior defender William Birchard earned NCAA Division III Second-Team All-America honors from the United Soccer Coaches and sophomore goalie Jacob Mays earned an NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Second-Team Academic All-America selection highlighting the individual accolades for the Stags. Senior center back Adam Singer was named the SCIAC Men's Soccer Athlete of the Year. Joining Singer on the All-SCIAC first team were junior defender William Birchard, sophomore midfielder Samay Rahim and sophomore forward William Barton. Senior forward Cole Smith, sophomore goalie Eduardo De Anda and sophomore forward Ethan Tyng were each chosen to the second team.

Women’s Cross Country

Sophomore Riley Harmon earned All-America honors with a 36th place finish as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's cross country team ended in 20th place at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships on Nov. 23. The Athenas have now made Nationals for 12-consecutive seasons. The 20th place finish at Nationals capped off a season that saw the Athenas win the SCIAC championship for the 29th time in program history and then go on to win the West Regionals.

First-year Isabella Brusco was named the SCIAC Newcomer of the Year while 10 Athenas were All-SCIAC. CMS had five runners on the All-SCIAC first team with top-10 finishes, and another five who were on the second team by finishing in the 11-20 spots. First-teamers included Harmon, Olivia Gleason, Abigail Johnson, Brooklyn Button and Dulcie Jones. Joining Brusco on the second team were Sophie Gitlin, Georgia Scherer, Emily Clarke and Gabriella Kimmerly.

Volleyball

The Athenas won the SCIAC Postseason Tournament for the third season in a row, won their fifth-straight SCIAC regular season title and advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the seventh-consecutive season. Along the way, the Athenas put together a 27-4 record, 15-1 in SCIAC matches.

Senior setter/right side hitter Phoebe Madsen earned a first-team American Volleyball Coaches Association All-America honor for the second year in a row, while senior Amanda Walker earned second-team honors. The two All-Americans were joined on the honorable mention All-America team by junior middle hitter Melanie Moore and senior libero Sarah Tritschler. Madsen was also West Region Player of the Year and SCIAC Volleyball Athlete of the Year, while Moore, Tritschler and Walker were also All-Region and All-SCIAC.

Football

The Stags closed out the season with a 20-17 win at home over Pomona-Pitzer on Nov. 16, bringing back the Sixth Street Rivalry trophy to CMS. Overall, CMS went 5-5 in 2019 with wins over Northwestern (Minn.), Pacific Lutheran, Occidental, Whittier and Pomona-Pitzer.

Senior center Jett Zeimantz earned a spot on the All-SCIAC first team for the second year in a row, while senior running back Garrett Cheadle, junior offensive lineman Jacob Lyle and sophomore cornerback Benjamin Cooney were each named to the second team.

CMS Stands in Fourth Place in Latest Learfield Directors' Cup Rankings

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps athletic program moved up to fourth place in the latest Learfield IMG College Directors' Cup standings for the 2019-20 academic year, which were released on Dec. 12. CMS has 305.50 points after six sports have been factored in to the national rankings (one of which, field hockey, CMS doesn't offer), just edging out Middlebury by a half-point for fourth place.

Winter Sports Update

Men’s Swim & Dive

The Stags are ranked No. 9 in Division III in the latest polls after their two-day dual meet win over Pomona-Pitzer on Dec. 6-7. CMS defeated Pomona-Pitzer 193-160 and now are 4-0 in SCIAC meets this season and next compete at the Cal Baptist Distance Meet on Jan. 10, followed by a SCIAC meet at La Verne on Jan. 11.

Women’s Swim & Dive

The Athenas are ranked No. 11 in Division III after defeating Pomona-Pitzer 200-153 on Dec. 6-7. The Athenas are now 4-0 in SCIAC and next compete at the Cal Baptist Distance Meet on Jan. 10, followed by a SCIAC meet at La Verne on Jan. 11.

Women’s Basketball

With 12 games played, the Athenas sit at 8-4 overall, 1-2 in SCIAC. The Athenas came out with six-straight wins to start the season, defeating Puget Sound, Emory, Willamette, Nebraska Wesleyan, Gustavus Adolphus, and Hendrix along the way. The Athenas dropped back-to-back games at Washington University, St. Louis and Pomona-Pitzer prior to the Holiday break. After the two-week layoff, the Athenas returned to play and have gone 2-2 so far. Next up, the Athenas take on Caltech in Pasadena on Jan. 11

Men’s Basketball

The Stags are 10-3 so far this season with a 2-2 record in conference play. At 2-2, the Stags are in a tie for fifth place and have SCIAC wins over Whittier and Cal Lutheran and a pair of narrow losses to Pomona-Pitzer and Chapman. The Stags are on the road for their next two games - at Caltech (Jan. 11) and Redlands (Jan. 15) before returning home to Roberts Pavilion on Jan. 22 to take on Occidental.

Hall of Fame Registration Open Now

Coach John Goldhammer (Cross Country and Track & Field), Ryan Gibson (HMC ’03 - Track & Field), Dianna Turner-Graves (CMC ’98 - Volleyball, Basketball and Track & Field), Ryan Gocong (CMC ’03 - Football) and Todd McKenzie (CMC ’88) have been selected as the newest members of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athletics Alumni Association Hall of Fame. CMS’ 29th Hall of Fame class will be inducted during the Hall of Fame Ceremony on January 25, 2020 at Claremont McKenna College’s Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum.
