Update on CMS 2020-21 Fall Competition

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Claremont McKenna College announced its detailed plan this afternoon for the return of students for the fall semester, and has established new guidelines regarding participation in athletics and recreation activities.

Athletics is an important part of many students' experience. The NCAA has released guidance on the resocialization of collegiate sports. Los Angeles County has not currently met the state or local gating criteria recommended to resume intercollegiate athletics. Health guidance strongly advises against participation in high-risk sports as defined by the NCAA. These include the following CMS Athletics fall and winter sports: basketball, football, soccer, volleyball, and water polo.  Unfortunately, these CMS sports will not be permitted to compete this fall.

CMS Athletics will continue to evaluate the opportunity to participate in limited, conference-only schedules for fall and winter low-risk sports (cross country, golf, swimming & diving, and tennis) if conditions in the Southern California region improve in the coming weeks. Basketball will not compete in the fall.  The spring portion of the basketball season will be evaluated in the late fall along with all spring sports.

Spring competition opportunities for the high-risk fall sports (football, volleyball, soccer and water polo) will be evaluated in late fall against prevailing health regulations and guidance from the NCAA and SCIAC.

Physical Education course offerings will be available, but modified to comply with public health guidelines and some may be held virtually.  Club sports will not be permitted in the fall semester.  CMS will be monitoring state and local regulations for gyms as well as recommendations by NIRSA to assess the safety of recreation programming for the fall.  This includes, but is not limited to, drop-in fitness classes, intramurals, and fitness center and weight room usage.  CMS also intends to host virtual recreation programming as it did during the spring semester.
