SCIAC Announces 2017-18 Fall Preseason Rankings

LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. – Over the course of the next week the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) will release the results of their Preseason Coaches Polls. Check this story for results of all seven Preseason Polls for the fall sports conducted by the conference.

Women's Soccer

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer program was ranked third behind Pomona-Pitzer (7 first place votes), who finished last season in the NCAA Elite Eight, and Cal Lutheran. The Athenas went 17-6-1 overall with a conference record of 11-2-1 last season, taking second place in the SCIAC. They defeated Pacific Lutheran 1-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last season before losing to Pomona-Pitzer in the second round.

Football

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football team checked in at number three in the SCIAC Preseason Coaches Poll. The Stags finished the 2016 season with a 7-2 overall record and a 5-2 mark in the conference. Ahead of the Stags in the preseason standings are Redlands (last year's conference champions) and Cal Lutheran. The Stags collected 51 points in the preseason poll, tying them with Cal Lutheran, but the Kingsmen took the second spot thanks to recieving one first-place vote. Redlands took the top spot with 60 points and seven first-place votes.

Men's Soccer

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team was placed third with 49 points behind Chapman and Redlands. The Stags finished fourth in the SCIAC last season, going 11-7-1 overall with a 9-6-1 conference record.  CMS faced Redlands in the SCIAC Semifinals, falling 2-0 to the eventual conference champions. Redlands, who unanimously secured all the first place votes, is currently ranked seventh in the nation by the United Soccer Coaches and finished in the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament last season.

Women's Volleyball

The SCIAC announced the 2017 women's volleyball preseason poll, listing Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the top spot. The Athenas garnered all the first place votes in the poll, ranking above last season's SCIAC Tournament champion Cal Lutheran. CMS finished the 2016-17 season with a 23-4 overall record, going 14-2 in conference play to tie for first in the SCIAC alongside Cal Lutheran.

Men's Cross Country

With two first place votes, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's cross country team were ranked second in the SCIAC Preseason Poll behind cross-street rival Pomona-Pitzer. The Stags took first place in the SCIAC last season and saw six runners named on the All-SCIAC Team. They went on to take fifth overall in the NCAA Championships under the guidance of West Region Coach of the Year, John Goldhammer.

Women's Cross Country

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's cross country team were voted to the top spot in the SCIAC Preseason Poll, securing eight first place votes. The Athenas were placed ahead of Pomona-Pitzer and Occidental College as Head Coach John Goldhammer guides the team in his 34th season. CMS secured its 26th SCIAC Championship last season and finished in 15th at the NCAA Championship. Four All-SCIAC runners from last season will be returning this year, including Bryn McKillop (SC '18), Laura Broderick (SC '18), Roselyn Cantu (CMC '18), and Malea Martin (CMC '19).

Men's Water Polo

The SCIAC placed the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team in fourth in the 2017 Preseason Poll as they Stags earned one first place vote. The Stags were ranked behind last season's SCIAC Champion, Pomona-Pitzer, Redlands, and Whittier. CMS finished last season in second place after a valiant playoff run where they defeated Occidental and Whittier before falling to Pomona-Pitzer in the final.
