HAZING

INTRODUCTION

Club Sports Hazing Policy

Hazing is in violation of California law and as such is strictly prohibited in The Claremont Colleges Club Sports program. Hazing is defined in the California Educational Code, section 32050, as "any method of initiation or pre-initiation into a student organization or any pastime or amusement engaged in with respect to such an organization which causes, or is likely to cause, bodily danger, physical harm, or personal degradation or disgrace resulting in physical or mental harm, to any student or other person attending any school, community college, college, university or other educational institution in this state".

For the purposes of the club sports policy, hazing also includes any activity that causes harassment, fright, humiliation, ridicule, interference with academic efforts, and/or significant impairment or endangerment of physical well being.  Furthermore, any action that compels an individual to participate in an activity that is illegal, perverse, publicly indecent or contrary to an individual's moral or religious beliefs constitutes hazing at The Claremont Colleges.

The club sports council will investigate and adjudicate any allegation of hazing. In the event hazing is determined to have occurred, the council will implement sanctions against the offending team and/or individuals in relation to the club sports program--including the potential for suspension of the team and/or individuals from the club sports program (see club sports handbook).

In all cases, the club sports council and/or program director shall refer all individuals suspected of participating in activity constituting hazing to the dean of students of the college(s) at which the student(s) is(are) enrolled. The dean shall consider the allegations and follow the guidelines, policies and/or procedures for student discipline outlined in the college's student handbook.
